The SELPHY line does small desktop photo printing using dye-sublimation thermal transfer with overcoating — not inkjet. Canon Hong Kong's specifications list 300 x 300 dpi resolution with 256 shades per colour, a postcard-size print in approximately 41 seconds and a card-size print in approximately 23 seconds. Dye-sublimation with overcoating
The print method is dye-sublimation thermal transfer with an overcoat layer. Unlike inkjet, each colour is transferred in turn and then sealed with a protective film, which gives an even surface finish. Resolution is 300 x 300 dpi with 256 shades per colour.
Supported print sizes
Postcard borderless 100.0 x 148.0 mm, postcard bordered 91.3 x 121.7 mm, card borderless 54.0 x 86.0 mm, card bordered 49.9 x 66.6 mm, 8-label card at 22.0 x 17.3 mm per label, and square labels at 50 x 50 mm. Paper capacity is 18 sheets.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is supported, along with a USB Type-C (USB 2.0) port. There is a built-in SD memory card slot and USB flash drive support. The screen is a 3.5-inch TFT LCD colour monitor with approximately 230,000 dots.
Paper and ink cassettes are sold separately
This needs saying plainly: SELPHY runs on matched paper-and-ink cassette sets, all of which are consumables purchased separately. It will not print indefinitely. Canon Hong Kong lists compatible postcard sets KP-36IP, RP-54, RP-108 and RP-1080V, plus card-size sets KC-36IP, KC-18IF, KC-18IL and KC-18IS. Before buying the printer, work out how many prints you need and how many sets that means.
