Samsung HW-Q990H: the 2026 flagship 11.1.4, built for Samsung TV homes
The Samsung HW-Q990H is Samsung's 2026 flagship soundbar system: 11.1.4 channels from 23 physical drivers across four boxes — main bar, wireless subwoofer, and two separate wireless rears. The "4" in 11.1.4 means four height channels, and the official specification confirms the system carries up-firing drivers.

In our ladder: the Bar 800MK2 (HK$4,480) gives you real rears, but its official spec sheet lists no up-firing drivers, so height there is virtual. From this tier up, the height channels are physical drivers too.

11.1.4: the rears and the height are physical drivers
The main bar carries centre, front wide-firing, side-firing and up-firing drivers, joined by two separate rear speakers — 23 physical drivers across the set. Plenty of cheaper soundbars advertise Dolby Atmos while generating surround and height entirely in DSP. This one does not. A helicopter tracking front to back, rain falling from overhead — the directionality comes from drivers in those positions.
New for 2026: Sound Elevation, Auto Volume, AI Dynamic Bass Control
Sound Elevation shifts the whole sound stage vertically — a low sofa or a high wall mount, either way it lands at ear level. Auto Volume levels out the jumps between programmes and sources, so changing channel doesn't wake the household. AI Dynamic Bass Control adjusts the low end to the content in real time. These three are the H generation's genuine additions over last year.
Q-Symphony and Wireless Dolby Atmos
Pairing with a Samsung TV is this system's home ground. Q-Symphony keeps the TV's own speakers playing alongside the bar rather than muting them, giving a wider stage and dialogue that sits closer to the picture. Wireless Dolby Atmos goes further and sends Atmos from the TV to the bar with no HDMI cable at all.

Two HDMI inputs with 4K 120Hz passthrough
Two HDMI inputs mean a PS5 and an Xbox Series X can stay connected at the same time, with 4K 120Hz video passed through to the TV. If your TV is short on inputs, this quietly solves that too.
Worth knowing: the official spec sheet lists 4K 120Hz passthrough but does not list VRR. If VRR matters to your gaming, connect the console straight to the TV and run the soundbar over eARC. If you need three HDMI inputs, see the Bar 1300MK2.

Samsung TV at home → take this one. Q-Symphony and Eclipsa Audio are things the Bar 1300MK2 does not have, and this is HK$1,800 cheaper.
You own DTS:X discs, your source outputs Dolby Vision, or you need three devices connected → take the JBL. None of those three appear on Samsung's official spec sheet.
No power socket near the rear positions → take the JBL. Detachable battery rears solve exactly that.
Small flat, nowhere for a big subwoofer → take this one. Samsung's sub is considerably smaller and 3.7 kg lighter.

Frequently asked questions
Does the HW-Q990H support Dolby Atmos?
Yes, and the height channels are physical — the four height channels come from real up-firing drivers, not virtualisation. Eclipsa Audio is officially listed as supported too.
Does it support DTS:X?
Samsung's official spec sheet lists no DTS format of any kind. If you own DTS:X discs, look at the Bar 1300MK2, whose official specification includes DTS:X.
Does it support Dolby Vision?
No. The official HDR row lists HDR10+ only. Worth noting: if your TV is itself a Samsung, it does not support Dolby Vision either, so nothing is lost.
Are the rear speakers wireless?
Wireless for signal, not for power. Each rear needs its own socket and draws 19W. If there is no socket near the sofa, consider the battery-powered rears of the Bar 1300MK2.
Is the voltage a problem in Hong Kong?
No. The official spec sheet states Free Voltage, so it runs on Hong Kong's 220V directly with no transformer.
Do I need to buy a wall bracket separately?
No. The official accessory list includes a wall mount bracket in the box.
Is it good for gaming?
Two HDMI inputs keep two consoles connected at once, and 4K 120Hz video passthrough is officially listed. VRR, however, is not listed. If VRR matters to you, connect the console straight to the TV and run the soundbar over eARC.
Do I need a Samsung TV to use it?
No. Any TV with HDMI eARC gets every audio feature. A Samsung TV additionally unlocks Q-Symphony and Wireless Dolby Atmos.
What changed from last year's Q990F?
The hardware specifications are identical line for line — dimensions, weights, driver count, power draw, HDMI, Bluetooth, HDR, 4K passthrough. Not one figure differs. What the H adds is Eclipsa Audio, Sound Elevation, Auto Volume, AI Dynamic Bass Control and the Samsung Sound App; and Tap Sound, present on the F, is absent from the H's official spec sheet. In other words the price difference buys software features, not better speakers.
