The weak point of every Echo Dot has been bass, and the Echo Dot Max is Amazon's answer to that specifically. Instead of one full-range driver it splits the job across a dedicated woofer and tweeter, and it doubles as a smart home hub. These are international-version units, and Alexa runs in English.

Inside there are two speakers — a high-excursion woofer optimised for deep bass, and a custom tweeter handling the crisp high notes. Amazon's figure is nearly three times the bass of the Echo Dot (5th Gen), and that gap is most obvious on pop music and on film and TV audio where the previous Dot simply had nothing underneath.
AZ3 silicon and the Omnisense sensor platform
The Dot Max runs Amazon's own AZ3 chip and plugs into the Omnisense sensor platform. Amazon states the microphone array is improved with over 50% better wake-word detection, alongside better conversation detection and background noise filtering — in practice, it hears you more reliably with the TV or an extractor fan running.
Built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub
This unit is itself a smart home hub, supporting Zigbee, Matter and Thread. That means a good number of smart bulbs, sensors and plugs can join directly through the speaker instead of requiring you to buy and power a separate bridge, which is one less box and one less power adaptor behind the furniture.
Sound that adapts to the room
Amazon describes the Dot Max as producing room-filling sound that adapts automatically to the space it is placed in. The practical benefit is that moving it from a desk to a kitchen counter doesn't send you into an EQ menu — it adjusts on its own.

Does Alexa understand Cantonese on this speaker?
Alexa runs in English on this device and Chinese voice support is very limited, so don't buy it as a Cantonese-speaking smart speaker. Wake words, music requests, lighting commands and weather queries all need to be spoken in English. Whether the rest of your household can work with that is worth settling before you order.
Is there a Hong Kong manufacturer warranty?
No. Amazon has no official channel in Hong Kong, so these are parallel-import units with no Hong Kong manufacturer warranty. We cover them with the 10-day exchange-if-faulty terms above, and you are welcome to book a viewing at the Kwun Tong shop to test one first.
Can I pair two of them for stereo?
Amazon does support pairing two matching units as a stereo pair through the Alexa app. Note that both units need to be set up on the same Amazon account, and the region attached to that account affects which features and services are available to you.
