The first thing to know: this stick does not run the old Android-based Fire OS. It runs Amazon's new Vega operating system. On the hardware side it delivers 4K with HDR10+ and passes Dolby Atmos through untouched, and apps open quickly — but the software platform is new, and that is worth understanding before you buy.

Key features

4K output with HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG

Video goes out over HDMI at up to 3840 × 2160, with HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG supported. The HDMI port itself is compatible with 2.1, 2.0 and 1.4b, so it will slot into new and older sets alike. Note that Dolby Vision is not listed in the specifications — if you bought your TV specifically for Dolby Vision, this is not the right stick for it.

The new Vega operating system

This generation runs Vega OS 1.1, Amazon's own platform, which Amazon describes as responsive and highly efficient. In use, apps launch fast and the interface stays snappy. But it is a brand new platform, and the catalogue of available apps differs from the older Android-based Fire sticks — don't assume everything you currently use will be there.

Dolby Atmos and DTS passthrough

Onboard decoding covers AAC, FLAC, MP3, Vorbis, PCM/WAVE and Opus. Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, Dolby Atmos, DTS and DTS-HD are handled as HDMI passthrough instead, meaning the bitstream is handed intact to your soundbar or AV receiver to decode — which is what you want if you have Atmos gear downstream.

Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0

Wi-Fi is 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, which is comfortably enough for 4K streaming on ordinary home broadband. Bluetooth 5.0 with BLE support is also on board for headphones, game controllers or a keyboard.

Who it's for

  • Anyone wanting the cheapest way to give an older 4K TV a fast, clean streaming interface.
  • Existing Amazon account holders who already use the associated streaming services.
  • Owners of an Atmos soundbar or receiver who want a compact source that passes audio through cleanly.
  • Who it isn't for: anyone who needs Dolby Vision, which is not listed in the specifications. It is also not for anyone expecting to plug it in and find every streaming app used in Hong Kong waiting there — which apps you can use depends on your own accounts and their region, so check that yourself first.

FAQ

Will all the streaming apps work in Hong Kong?

There is no blanket answer. The interface and Alexa voice features run in English, and whether a given streaming service works for you depends on your own account, subscription and account region — not on the hardware. Confirm the services you care about against your own account before ordering; we don't guarantee availability of any particular app.

Is there a Hong Kong manufacturer warranty?

No. Amazon has no official retail channel in Hong Kong, so these are parallel-import units and carry no Hong Kong manufacturer warranty. Cover is the 10-day exchange-if-faulty listed above.

Does it support Dolby Vision?

The official specifications list HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG only, with no mention of Dolby Vision. If Dolby Vision is a requirement for your setup, this is not the stick to choose.
