The P8L is the entry point into TCL's Mini LED range at 65 inches, and it is the model where two things change at once: the backlight becomes Mini LED with local dimming, and the panel becomes 144Hz native. Both are real hardware changes rather than processing tricks, which is why the jump from the P7L is more significant than the model numbers suggest.

Key features

QD-Mini LED backlight with 16-bit control

The P8L combines a Mini LED backlight with a quantum dot colour layer — TCL's QD-Mini LED arrangement. The backlight is driven with 16-bit control at the 55- and 65-inch sizes, giving finer gradation between backlight levels than the coarser stepping of conventional dimming. TCL does not publish a dimming zone count for the 65-inch P8L, so we do not quote one; the rated brightness is 450 cd/m².

144Hz native panel, up to 288Hz VRR over HDMI

This is a genuinely 144Hz panel, not a 60Hz panel with interpolation. Connected to a PS5, an Xbox Series X or a PC, it accepts 4K signals at up to 144Hz, and TCL's Game Accelerator extends variable refresh rate handling to 288Hz over HDMI with a compatible source. For anyone who plays games on their TV, this is the single biggest reason to choose the P8L over the P7L.

ONKYO 2.1 Hi-Fi audio with Dolby Atmos

The 65-inch P8L carries ONKYO's 2.1 Hi-Fi system, meaning a dedicated bass driver alongside the stereo pair rather than a 2.0 arrangement leaning on virtual processing. Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X decoding are both supported. The practical result is that the built-in sound is usable on its own for TV and casual film watching in a way that thinner 2.0 systems generally are not.

Four HDMI inputs, Google TV and a Hong Kong tuner

Four HDMI inputs is one more than the P7L and V6C offer, which matters once a console, a soundbar and a streaming box are all connected. The panel is a CSOT HVA type with 5000:1 native contrast, HDR support covers Dolby Vision and HDR10, and Google TV handles the software side. A built-in digital terrestrial tuner receives Hong Kong free-to-air channels from an aerial.

Who it's for

  • Console gamers who want a true 144Hz panel and four HDMI inputs without moving into premium Mini LED pricing.
  • Households upgrading from an older LED set who want local dimming and Dolby Vision in one step.
  • Anyone who does not want to add a soundbar immediately — the ONKYO 2.1 system handles everyday viewing on its own.
  • Not for bright-room HDR enthusiasts. At 450 cd/m² the P8L is far below the 3,000 and 5,000 nit figures of the C7L and C8L, so HDR highlights in a sunlit room will look restrained. Step up if peak brightness is the priority.

Warranty and delivery

This is Hong Kong licensed stock (行貨) carrying the manufacturer's Hong Kong warranty. The exact warranty term is stated on the warranty card supplied with the set. Viewing is available by appointment at our Kwun Tong showroom.

Delivery with tabletop installation is HK$300, or delivery with wall mounting is HK$600 with the bracket included. Collection at the Kwun Tong shop is free. Walk-up buildings without a lift add HK$100 per floor, with no cap. Discovery Bay adds HK$500. Cheung Chau and Lamma Island orders are delivered to the Central pier for self-collection, without installation. Installation is a paid service and is not included in the price of the set.

Frequently asked questions

How is the P8L different from the A400M?

Both are QD-Mini LED sets running at 144Hz native with ONKYO audio. The A400M adds a published dimming zone count — TCL states up to 488 precise dimming zones at 65 inches — plus HDMI 2.1 inputs with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and a much slimmer 39.9mm flat-back cabinet. The P8L is the simpler, more compact-budget entry into Mini LED.

Is 144Hz the real panel refresh rate?

Yes. The P8L panel refreshes natively at 144Hz and will accept a 4K 144Hz input over HDMI. The 288Hz figure refers to TCL's VRR Game Accelerator working with a compatible source, and is separate from the native rate.

Does it receive Hong Kong free-to-air TV?

Yes. A digital terrestrial tuner is built in, so an aerial connection brings in the local free-to-air channels without a set-top box.
