Hong Kong living rooms: what fits at 2 m, 2.5 m and 3 m
Most Hong Kong flats put the sofa 2 to 3 metres from the TV wall. Here is what that actually supports:
| Distance | Typical HK layout | Min | Best fit | Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0 m | Compact flat / bedroom | 50" | 55" | 65" |
| 2.5 m | Most HK living rooms | 55" | 65" | 83" |
| 3.0 m | Larger flat / open plan | 75" | 85" | 98" |
Should you size up?
The single most common regret we hear after delivery is "I should have gone bigger" — almost never the reverse. Three reasons Hong Kong buyers systematically under-size:
1. The old 1080p rule no longer applies
The "sit 2.5× the diagonal away" guidance came from an era when sitting closer meant seeing pixels. At 4K, pixel density is roughly four times higher, so the same seat supports a noticeably larger screen without any loss of sharpness.
2. Screens look smaller at home than in a shop
A showroom has high ceilings and wide sightlines. The same TV against a normal living-room wall reads smaller. This is a known perceptual effect, not a trick.
3. The price gap between sizes is smaller than people assume
The step from 55" to 65" is usually far less than the step in perceived screen area — a 65" has about 40% more screen area than a 55".
But size up honestly. If your seat is genuinely under 2 m away, or you mostly watch broadcast TV rather than 4K streaming, the conservative column is the right one. A screen that is too large for the distance makes you move your head to follow the picture, which is tiring.
Before you order: will it fit in your lift?
Hong Kong has more than 70,000 lifts, many of them over 30 years old. Typical residential lift door openings run 80–110 cm wide.
A TV box travels on its edge, so the door opening has to clear the box depth (around 18 cm) — that part is almost never the problem. The real constraint is the box width against the lift car's internal diagonal:
| Size | Box width (approx) | Standard HK lift |
|---|---|---|
| 43–55" | 107–134 cm | Fits comfortably |
| 65" | 156 cm | Usually fits diagonally |
| 75–77" | 178–182 cm | Borderline — check first |
| 83–100" | 196–233 cm | Often needs stairs or a service lift |
Wall mount or on a cabinet?
This changes the screen height, which changes the comfortable size. On a cabinet, the screen centre sits higher — usually around 100–110 cm off the floor once you add the stand. Wall mounting lets you drop the centre to roughly eye level when seated (about 100 cm), which is more comfortable and lets you go one size larger at the same distance.
Wall mounting also frees the cabinet width constraint entirely — worth knowing if your existing cabinet is narrower than the screen you want.
Frequently asked questions
Is 55 inches the width of the TV?
No. TV sizes are measured along the diagonal, corner to corner. A 55" TV is 121.8 cm wide and 68.5 cm tall for the panel itself, before bezels.
What size TV for a 2.5 m viewing distance?
The usable range is 55" (SMPTE minimum) to 83" (THX maximum). The best fit for most Hong Kong living rooms at that distance is 65" — large enough to feel modern, small enough that you are not turning your head to follow the picture.
Is 65 inches too big for a Hong Kong flat?
Rarely. At a 2 m viewing distance 65" already sits inside the THX recommendation. The more common mistake is buying 55" for a room that comfortably supports 65" or larger.
Will a 65" TV fit in my lift?
The box is roughly 156 cm wide and 20 cm deep. Most standard Hong Kong residential lifts take it diagonally. Send us a photo of your lift on WhatsApp if you want it confirmed before ordering.
What is the difference between the SMPTE and THX distances?
SMPTE assumes a 30° field of view, THX assumes 36°. THX fills more of your vision and is how cinema seating is laid out. 4K resolution makes the closer THX distance practical without visible pixels.
