There is one number on the Xtreme 5 specification sheet that most listings leave out, and it changes how you should read the rest: the 90 W woofer and two 20 W tweeters are the figures on mains power. Running on the battery, the same speaker delivers 60 W and 2 x 15 W. Both are honest; JBL publishes both. Plugged in at home it is a considerably bigger speaker than it is on a beach.

On AC: 1 x 90 W RMS woofer plus 2 x 20 W RMS tweeters. On battery: 1 x 60 W RMS plus 2 x 15 W RMS. The 98 x 145 mm woofer reaches down to 40 Hz at -6 dB either way — the difference is headroom, not extension.
28 hours, but read the Boost line carefully
24 hours on a charge plus 4 more with Playtime Boost. Worth noting for anyone upgrading: the Boost figure is two hours shorter than the Xtreme 4's, even though the base playtime is the same. The 68 Wh battery takes 3.5 hours to fill from the included 20 V PD adaptor.
Bluetooth 6.0 with LC3, Auracast only
Bluetooth 6.0 with SBC, AAC and LC3. Multi-speaker linking is Auracast. PartyBoost is no longer listed for the Xtreme 5, so an Xtreme 3 or a PartyBoost-era Flip will not link to it.
It charges your phone, and it is heavy
USB-C runs in and out, with reverse charging at up to 5 V / 3 A, 9 V / 2 A or 11 V / 2 A. The trade-off is weight: 2.9 kg, which is 0.8 kg more than the Xtreme 4. The shoulder strap in the box is not decorative.

Who it's for
- Anyone who wants one speaker to cover a flat and a rooftop, and will accept 2.9 kg to get it.
- Listeners who care about bass extension — 40 Hz from a portable is the reason to step up from a Charge 6.
- Not for anyone replacing an Xtreme 3 and hoping to link the two. Different systems.
- Not for carrying all day. If the speaker needs to go in a backpack alongside everything else, the Grip or Flip 7 is the sane choice.

Frequently asked questions
Is it really 90 W?
On mains power, yes — that is JBL's own rating for the woofer, with 20 W per tweeter on top. On battery it drops to 60 W plus 2 x 15 W. Most published comparisons quote only the AC figure, which is why the Xtreme 5 can sound quieter outdoors than the number suggests.
Will it link to my Xtreme 4 or Xtreme 3?
The Xtreme 4 supports Auracast and links. The Xtreme 3 and other PartyBoost-era speakers do not.
Can it charge a phone?
Yes, through the USB-C port, which runs both directions. Drawing power for a phone naturally shortens playtime.
