JBL publishes a drop rating for exactly one speaker in its current portable range, and this is it: one metre onto concrete, still playing. That is the Grip's argument. The rest of it is a 16 W RMS full-range driver in a can-sized body, an ambient light panel on the back, and 14 hours between charges.
Key features
A stated drop height, not just "rugged"
IP68 for dust and water is common across JBL's range. A published 1-metre drop onto concrete is not. If the speaker is going to live clipped to a bag or standing on a kitchen counter, that number is the one worth paying for.
16 W RMS from a 43 x 80 mm full-range driver
One oval full-range driver, 16 W RMS, 70 Hz to 20 kHz at -6 dB. AI Sound Boost analyses the signal in real time and adjusts output to hold the bass together at volume instead of letting it distort.
Ambient light on the back panel
The rear panel carries a light with theme and colour options, adjustable for brightness in the JBL Portable app. It is a mood light, not a party lightshow — if you want beat-synced effects, the PartyBox range is where they are.
14 hours, and Auracast
Twelve hours on a charge plus two more with Playtime Boost. Auracast links it to any other Auracast-enabled JBL speaker, or stereo-pairs two Grips.

Who it's for
- Anyone whose speaker gets knocked off tables, benches or bike racks. This is the one JBL has actually drop-tested to a published figure.
- Listeners who want more than a pocket speaker but less than a Flip 7 in size and price.
- Not for anyone who needs the newest Bluetooth. The Grip is on 5.4, while the Go 5, Xtreme 5 and PartyBox 130 are on 6.0. In practice it changes nothing for streaming, but it is worth knowing.
- Not for beat-synced lighting. The ambient panel does not follow the music.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 1-metre drop rating real, or marketing?
It is JBL's own published figure in the Grip specification sheet — one metre onto concrete. It is not a promise the speaker is indestructible, and it does not extend the warranty to accidental damage, but it is a documented design target rather than a slogan.
Bluetooth 5.4 instead of 6.0 — does it matter?
Not for sound quality or range in normal use. The Grip supports Auracast, which is the part that determines whether it will link to other speakers.
Can I pair it with a Go 5 or a Flip 7?
Yes, through Auracast. Two Grips can also be set as a left and right stereo pair.
