The short answer

The calculation, which you can run yourself
The formula is trivial:
Monthly cost = watts × hours per day × 30 ÷ 1000 × price per kWh
The hard part is not the arithmetic — it is which wattage to use. Specification sheets usually list three:
- Power Consumption (Max) — peak load: a full-white screen with brightness at maximum. Do not use this to estimate a bill.
- Power Consumption (Typical) — the average during normal viewing. This is the one to use.
- Power Consumption (Stand-by) — usually 0.5W on a current set.
How far apart are they? A real example: Samsung lists the S90F OLED 65-inch at 510W max and 145W typical — a factor of 3.5. The same-size QN85F Neo QLED is 240W max and 140W typical, a factor of 1.7. The OLED draws far more at peak highlights, but its average during ordinary viewing is almost identical to the Mini LED set. Estimate from the Max figure and you would conclude the OLED costs three times as much to run — which is simply wrong.

Both suppliers charge in tiers: the more you use, the higher the rate on the upper blocks, so a heavy household's marginal rate exceeds the average. The fuel component also moves monthly. The figures below use the average net tariff as a grounded estimate, not a precise forecast.

Notice the pattern: going from 55 inches to 75 inches changes the bill by around ten dollars a month. At the same size, the gap between OLED, Mini LED and Crystal UHD is smaller still — the two 65-inch sets differ by 5W. The idea that choosing a panel technology saves meaningful money on electricity does not survive the arithmetic. Why the yearly figure on the spec sheet looks so alarming
Specification sheets quote figures like "499 kWh a year" or "532 kWh" — which convert to several hundred dollars annually. Where does that come from?
It assumes ten hours of viewing every day. New Zealand's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority states that the energy label's annual figure assumes a set is "on for 10 hours a day, and in standby for 14 hours" — 3,650 hours a year. Check it yourself: the 75-inch set's 136W typical × 3,650 hours ÷ 1000 = 496 kWh, against the 499 kWh printed on the sheet.
A Hong Kong household watching four hours a day runs 1,460 hours a year — forty per cent of the label's assumption. So that same 75-inch set actually uses about 196 kWh a year, roughly $275 on CLP, not the figure the spec sheet implies.
Note too that an international-version set's energy data follows the test method of its home market, so the practical approach is to read the Typical wattage row on the official specification sheet and put it through the formula above. Standby power: the honest number
A current television draws 0.5W on standby. Left on standby around the clock for a month: 0.5W × 24 × 30 ÷ 1000 = 0.36 kWh, about $0.5 on CLP. In other words — fifty cents.
So "unplug it to save power" is, on a 2026 set, essentially pointless as an economy measure. Unplugging during storms and using a surge-protected strip remain worthwhile — but that is about protecting the power supply, not saving money. Three things that do save electricity
- Turn the brightness down. The backlight is where the power goes, and brightness controls it directly. Dimming for evening viewing saves power and is easier on the eyes — the one picture setting with a visible effect on consumption.
- Switch on the Eco Sensor and auto power saving. Models whose official specification sheet lists these as "Yes" do not always ship with them enabled. Turn them on and the set adjusts brightness to room lighting automatically.
- Switch it off when nobody is watching. Dull but decisive. Leaving a set running as background noise is the only habit that meaningfully raises consumption — four extra hours a day doubles the bill.
So should running costs affect which set you buy?
Honestly: not much. Moving from 55 to 75 inches costs about ten dollars more a month; choosing OLED over Mini LED at the same size costs a few dollars. These figures should not drive the decision — whether the size suits your room, whether the picture suits your viewing, and what the warranty actually covers all matter far more.
