Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuum Cleaners — Cordless Handheld Models, No Wall Mount Needed

Why cordless makes sense in a Hong Kong flat

Flats here are small and storage is scarce. The real nuisance with a corded vacuum is not suction — it is hunting for a socket, dragging a cable and then finding somewhere to put the thing away. A cordless vacuum solves all three: pick it up, use it, stand it down.

Every model we stock is free-standing, so no wall bracket and no drilling. In a rented flat that matters more than most specification lines.

Reading suction figures: AW and Kpa are not the same thing

Suction is the number most often misread when choosing a vacuum cleaner. Three different measurements are quoted, and they mean different things:

  • AW (air watts) — work done at the nozzle, which is what actually picks dirt up. This is the figure that compares meaningfully between machines.
  • Kpa (pascals) — sealed vacuum pressure. The number is much larger and does not track real cleaning performance.
  • W (watts) — motor power draw, not suction at all. A 400 W motor does not out-clean a 300 W one by definition.

Alongside the AW figure, look for third-party certification. Anyone can print a number; a TUV or SGS certified figure has been measured by someone other than the manufacturer.

Why the quoted runtime never seems to be enough

Every cordless vacuum quotes runtime at its lowest power setting. On maximum suction with a motorised floor head, expect between a quarter and a third of the stated figure. This is an industry convention rather than any one brand overstating things, so the numbers remain useful for comparison — just compare like with like.

A typical Hong Kong flat of 400 to 600 square feet takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes on a low or medium setting. A machine rated at 35 minutes is therefore already sufficient; a 70-minute rating is for larger flats, or for finishing the corridor and the stairs in the same session.

Filtration affects air quality more than suction does

Dust a vacuum picks up goes straight back into the room if the filter cannot hold it. HEPA H13 captures 99.95% of particles at the hardest-to-trap size. For households with pets, allergy sufferers or young children, this specification deserves more attention than the suction figure.

Weight decides whether you actually use it

Between a 3 kg machine and a 1.3 kg one there is little difference on the floor. The difference appears overhead — curtain rails, door frames, the tops of cabinets. If the plan is to reach for it daily rather than once a week, weight is the specification that decides it.

How to choose

  • Thick carpet or shedding pets — take the highest suction available, around the 180AW mark.
  • A large flat done in one pass — take the longest runtime, around 70 minutes.
  • No interest in power settings — choose a model with an automatic mode that reads the floor for you.
  • A small flat, or a second machine kept out for quick jobs — take the lightest, around 1.3 kg.
  • A cat or dog that reacts to noise — look for deliberate noise control.

Frequently asked questions

Is cordless powerful enough to replace a corded vacuum?

For hard floors, tile, low-pile carpet and everyday household dust, anything from 120AW upward is sufficient. Thick carpet and pet hair embedded in fibres call for the 180AW class. Cases that genuinely still need a corded machine are now rare.

Are the quoted runtimes accurate?

Yes, at the lowest setting. That is the standard across the industry rather than a quirk of any one brand, so the figures still compare fairly between models.

How often do filters need replacing?

It depends on use and on the home. HEPA filters are generally replaced every six to twelve months, with regular tapping out to extend their life. Households with pets replace them more often.

What does free-standing mean?

The machine stands up on its own without leaning on a wall or needing a mounted bracket. In a Hong Kong flat that means no drilling and no giving up a stretch of wall.
