FAQ

What's the difference between a TV box and a set-top box?

In Hong Kong, a "set-top box" usually means a digital TV (DTMB) receiver for free-to-air channels such as TVB and ViuTV. TV boxes and streaming sticks connect to the internet over Wi-Fi so you can watch streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix, and they don't receive free-to-air channels. To watch free-to-air TV, you need a DTMB set-top box or a TV with a built-in DTMB receiver, such as our Hong Kong licensed TCL TVs.

What's the difference between a streaming stick and a TV box?

A streaming stick is small. It plugs straight into the HDMI port on your TV or projector, runs on USB power and stays hidden behind the screen. A TV box is a separate unit that sits next to the TV and usually has more ports. Both work the same way: you pick an app with the remote and start watching.

How do I set one up?

Plug the stick into an HDMI port on your TV or projector, connect the USB power, and switch the input to that HDMI port. Then follow the on-screen steps to join Wi-Fi and sign in to your account. Services such as Netflix and Disney+ need their own subscription.

I already have a smart TV. Do I still need one?

Not if your TV works well. But if its system no longer gets updates, apps are slow to open, or the app you want won't install, a streaming stick usually costs far less than a new TV.
