No Sound on Your TV? Start With the Step That Tells You Why
When a TV suddenly loses sound, it is usually not broken. In most cases the cause is one of three things: the wrong audio output is selected, ARC/eARC is switched off or plugged into the wrong port, or the audio format does not match. All three are settings problems, and all three can be fixed in five minutes.
The trouble is that most guides work in the wrong order — they have you try one thing after another and end with "restore factory settings". Modern TVs have a built-in test that tells you in thirty seconds whether the hardware is at fault or a setting is. That belongs at the start, not the end.
Step one: the four things you can rule out in thirty seconds
- Mute — press the mute button once. Some sets show only a small icon when muted, which is easy to miss
- Volume genuinely at zero — turn it up and watch for the volume bar to appear on screen. If no volume bar appears at all, this is a remote problem, not a sound problem — try the physical buttons on the TV itself
- Change the source — switch channel or app. If only one app is silent, the problem is in that app, not the TV
- Check for a paired Bluetooth device — the one most people miss. If Sound Output was ever set to Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, and that device is off, flat, or out of range, the TV goes completely silent while the picture, the volume bar and every setting look entirely normal
On a Samsung, Sound Output typically offers TV Speaker, Soundbar (HDMI) and a list of Bluetooth devices. If you are not sure where the audio is currently being routed, set it back to TV Speaker — if sound returns, the TV itself is fine and the problem lies somewhere in your external audio chain.
Step two (the important one): use the built-in Sound Test
Almost every guide skips this. Every Samsung includes a set of diagnostics:

The TV plays a test tone through its own speakers. The conclusion is binary:
- You hear the test tone → the speakers and audio hardware are fine, so the problem must be a setting, a cable or a source. Go to step three
- You hear nothing at all → this points at hardware. Stop working through settings and go straight to the last section
The same Self Diagnosis menu holds several other useful tools that guides never mention:

Once you have run this menu you know which direction to investigate, instead of guessing.
Step three: no sound from a soundbar or home theatre, in this order
If you use a soundbar or home theatre system, nine times in ten it is one of the six items below. Work through them in order — the later steps depend on the earlier ones being right.
1. The cable must go in the port labelled ARC / eARC
Samsung's official instruction is to use the dedicated ports marked "HDMI (ARC/eARC)" on both the TV and the soundbar.
⚠ Many guides get this backwards. Some tell you to "try a different HDMI port to rule out a faulty port" — for a soundbar, doing that turns working sound into silence. Only one port on the TV supports the audio return channel; every other port is input-only. Move the cable and the sound is guaranteed to stop.
(Trying a different port is valid for a source device — a set-top box, PS5 or Blu-ray player can go in any port. A soundbar is not a source.)
2. Turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
ARC carries its control signalling over HDMI-CEC. With CEC off, the ARC link never establishes.
Path: All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → on
3. Turn on HDMI-eARC Mode — it ships switched off
If your soundbar supports eARC (most Dolby Atmos models do), this has to be enabled. Samsung's own documentation states that the default setting is off.
Path: Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode → Auto
Plenty of people buy an Atmos soundbar, connect it correctly, and get silence or only 5.1 — purely because this toggle was never turned on.
4. Set the TV's sound output to Soundbar (HDMI)
Settings → Sound → Sound Output → Soundbar (HDMI). If it does not appear in the list, go back and do steps 1 to 3 — usually the cable is in the wrong port or CEC is off.
5. Set the correct source on the soundbar itself
Samsung's official guidance: set the soundbar's source to D.IN, then watch its display — it should show "D.IN" and then change to "TV ARC".
If it stays on D.IN and never switches to TV ARC, the ARC handshake has not completed — go back to steps 1 to 3. That display is the most direct diagnostic you have, and far faster than trying settings at random.
6. Set the digital output format to Auto
Path: All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → Digital Output Audio Format → Auto
Auto is Samsung's own recommendation. (Some articles tell you to select "Bitstream" — Samsung TVs have no such option. Bitstream is the terminology on the Blu-ray player side. Two different settings on two different devices; do not confuse them.)
ARC, eARC and optical are not interchangeable
Guides often say "switch to a wired connection, such as optical or HDMI", as though the two were equivalent. They are very different — and if you own a Dolby Atmos soundbar, choosing wrongly means paying for capability you will never hear.

Dolby's own developer documentation puts it directly: HDMI ARC does not have the data capacity to carry Dolby Atmos encoded as Dolby TrueHD — and TrueHD is exactly the format used on Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray. Samsung likewise documents Dolby TrueHD and multi-channel LPCM as eARC only.
As for optical, Dolby states that devices with S/PDIF outputs all support stereo PCM and that most add Dolby Digital 5.1 — and nothing beyond that. So an Atmos soundbar connected by optical will play sound, but will never play Atmos.
The cable matters too. Samsung specifies that eARC requires "an eARC supported HDMI cable (HEAC or HEC)". So the usual advice to "buy a better cable" needs to be more precise: what you need is the right specification, not a higher price. A compliant cable is inexpensive — but a non-compliant one can leave a flagship soundbar completely silent.
⚠ No sound at all on a Blu-ray or a movie file? It may be DTS
This is the most real, and least known, cause of "no sound during a film".
Samsung's official support page settles it in one line: DTS is only available on models released before 2018.
Which means no current Samsung TV decodes DTS. Play a Blu-ray or a movie file with a DTS soundtrack and the result is: the picture plays normally and there is no sound whatsoever. Almost every customer concludes the TV is broken.
Note also that Samsung documents DTS, DTS Master and DTS:X as unsupported even over eARC — so this is not something a different cable or a toggle will fix.
Samsung's own solution is to re-route the chain:
- Not: source → TV → soundbar
- Instead: source → soundbar → TV
That way the Blu-ray player feeds the soundbar directly for decoding and the TV only handles picture, which bypasses the TV's DTS limitation entirely. Both the HW-Q990H and the JBL Bar 800MK2 have HDMI inputs and can be wired this way.

The source device can silence things too
The problem is not always in the TV. A PS5, Apple TV, set-top box or computer can output a format that something downstream cannot decode, and the result is silence.
- PS5 / Xbox — if the audio format is set to Dolby Atmos and any link in the chain does not support it, you can get no sound at all. Set it to Linear PCM first; if sound returns, you have confirmed a format problem and can work upward from there
- Apple TV and streaming boxes — these offer both automatic and manually specified formats. Manually specifying something downstream cannot handle produces silence
- Blu-ray players — Samsung's official recommendation is to set the player's Digital Output to Bitstream (unprocessed) and let the soundbar do the decoding
- A computer connected to the TV — both Windows and macOS treat the TV as a separate audio device. If system output is still pointed at the laptop's own speakers, the TV stays silent
The fastest test: connect a completely different source to the same port — even a phone over HDMI will do. Sound returns → the original device is the problem. Still silent → the TV or the cable is.
Only some channels are silent: in Hong Kong the answer is not "call your provider"
Overseas guides say "adjust the antenna, or contact your cable or satellite provider". Hong Kong free-to-air television has no provider to call.
The local situation, per the Office of the Communications Authority:
- Hong Kong has been fully digital since 1 December 2020, covering at least 99% of the population
- There are currently 16 DTT programme channels, six of them launched only in the past three years
- Official guidance states that to receive newly launched channels, you may need to rescan
So in Hong Kong, the usual answer to "some channels have no sound or no picture" is: rescan. After a new channel launches or a frequency changes, a TV that has not been rescanned is still looking for signals according to its old table — some channels vanish entirely, and others show a picture while failing to pick up an audio track.
How: Settings → Broadcasting → Auto Program (the wording varies slightly by brand). The Office of the Communications Authority publishes brand-specific guides, including Hisense, LG, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba, and runs an enquiry hotline on 2961 6333.
If some channels are still affected after a rescan, use the Broadcast Signal diagnostic from step two to check reception strength — at that point it is usually the aerial or the building's communal aerial system rather than the TV.
Restart, firmware, reset — in that order
1. Power cycle
Switch off, unplug, wait, plug back in. This clears transient software state. Do the soundbar, set-top box and console at the same time — a failed ARC handshake often only recovers when both ends restart together.
2. Update the firmware
Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Audio-format compatibility problems, eARC and Atmos especially, genuinely do get fixed in firmware. Recent sets update themselves by default, but it is worth checking manually.
3. Factory reset — last, not early
Many guides place this far too early. It does not belong there. A reset wipes every picture and sound setting, your Wi-Fi and every app login — and it cannot fix a hardware fault, a cable in the wrong port, or CEC being switched off.
It is only worth doing when two things are true at once: the built-in Sound Test produces sound (so the speakers work), and everything above has been tried without success. Note down your own settings before you do it.
Common advice that does not hold up
- "Disconnect unused devices to reduce input overload" — an idle device on an unused input has no pathway by which it can mute your TV. The real phenomenon nearby is HDMI-CEC devices contending for control, which is exactly why Samsung ships an "HDMI-CEC Check" diagnostic. So unplugging devices one at a time is a useful test — but for CEC conflicts, not for "overload"
- "Try a different HDMI port" — valid for source devices, but for a soundbar it will cause the silence rather than cure it (see step three, item 1)
- "Use an expensive HDMI cable" — price is not the variable, specification is. eARC needs an eARC-capable (HEAC/HEC) cable; a cheap compliant cable beats an expensive non-compliant one
- "Keeping the volume low protects the speakers" — no practical effect on a modern TV. What damages speakers is sustained clipping at maximum, not ordinary listening levels
If the TV's own speakers have failed, a soundbar usually beats a repair
If the built-in Sound Test produces nothing and the set is out of warranty, it is worth considering a soundbar instead — repairing TV speakers often means replacing a whole audio board, whereas a soundbar both solves the problem and sounds considerably better than any built-in speaker (the thinner the TV, the less internal volume its speakers have; that is a structural compromise of modern slim sets, not a defect).

Still no sound: how our warranty actually works
If the built-in Sound Test produces nothing, the fault is a hardware one and there is no point working through more settings.
⚠ This part matters, and it is widely misunderstood: we sell international-version TVs, and the warranty is provided directly by Elechid rather than by the manufacturer. Calling Samsung Hong Kong or LG Hong Kong will not get you help — contact us instead.
