Every television sold today has "AI" on the box. But what is the set actually doing? Which parts are real features, and which are marketing?
This guide takes them one at a time — including something most TV articles will not touch: what data your television collects, and how to switch it off.
First, which assistant actually works with which brand
A great many articles online get this wrong, including plenty of television retailers' own websites.

If you live in the Alexa ecosystem, check the official specification for the exact model before you buy. Do not rely on a product description or an article online — this is the single most frequently misstated specification in the industry.

AI picture processing: what it does and does not do
Upscaling
This is the most widely misunderstood item on the list. Upscaling does not create detail out of nothing.
What it does is estimate — a trained model predicts what the missing pixels should be. Good upscaling makes the image look cleaner, with smoother edges and less visible noise.
It does not turn 1080p into genuine 4K. Anywhere you read "upscaled to near 4K quality", that is an overpromise.
That said, upscaling matters more in Hong Kong than most places — most local viewing is broadcast television and compressed streaming, none of which is native 4K. Day to day, the quality of the upscaler affects what you see more than the panel specification does.
Ambient light adjustment
A light sensor reads the room and adjusts brightness automatically. Hong Kong living rooms swing hard between day and night, so this one genuinely earns its place.
But note: automatic adjustment is convenient, not accurate. If you want accurate colour, still switch to Movie or Filmmaker Mode and set brightness by hand for day and night.
Scene recognition
The set identifies whether it is showing sport, film or animation and adjusts accordingly. Useful for casual viewing, though it also moves the picture away from how the content was graded.
AI audio
The audio AI features that actually appear on Samsung's official specification sheets are Adaptive Sound (adjusting settings to the content in real time) and Object Tracking Sound (moving audio with on-screen objects).
These do help, particularly with dialogue clarity. But in fairness: built-in speakers in a thin chassis are a physical limitation. No amount of AI processing recovers the bass and soundstage a small driver cannot produce. If dialogue is hard to follow, a soundbar does more than any setting.
Smart home integration
Samsung uses SmartThings, and the official specifications for current sets list SmartThings Hub and Matter Hub support. LG runs its own ecosystem on webOS.
In practice that means viewing a door camera on the TV, switching lights, or controlling air conditioning. Check that the devices you already own are compatible before you buy — the Matter standard has made this far easier, but not every older device supports it.
What your television collects about you
Most TV articles skip this. We think you should know.
ACR — Automatic Content Recognition
Modern smart televisions carry a feature called ACR (Automatic Content Recognition). Samsung's official support documentation states that when it is enabled, it collects:
- your viewing history, including which programmes you watched and for how long
- Smart TV identifiers and the Personalized Service ID
- your IP address
Samsung also states that it does not record or watch the content displayed on your screen, and that the feature is optional and can be disabled in settings.
How to turn it off
Samsung calls it Viewing Information Services, usually found under Settings and then Terms & Privacy. LG's equivalent is Live Plus, generally under Additional Settings.
Menu names and locations move between model years, so we are not going to print one fixed path here — a wrong path would only send you hunting.

What happens if you disable it
Mainly that home screen recommendations and targeted advertising become less tailored. Watching television, streaming apps and every basic function are unaffected.

Frequently asked questions
Do Samsung TVs support Alexa?
On the Samsung specification sheets we have checked, the voice assistant listed is Bixby, and Alexa does not appear. If you depend on the Alexa ecosystem, confirm the official specification for your exact model before buying.
Can AI upscaling turn old content into 4K?
No. Upscaling estimates the missing pixels; it does not recover real detail. It can make an image look cleaner and smoother, but that is not the same as native 4K.
Is "AI picture quality" worth paying for?
Processor tier genuinely affects upscaling and motion handling, and since most Hong Kong viewing is compressed streaming and broadcast television, the upscaler matters. But do not buy on the letters "AI" alone — look at the processor model and the panel specification.
Can I switch off the data collection?
Yes. ACR is optional and can be disabled in settings. Samsung calls it Viewing Information Services; LG calls it Live Plus. Basic functions are unaffected — only recommendations and advertising become less targeted.
Does disabling ACR affect Netflix?
No. Streaming apps run their own recommendation systems, which are separate from the television's ACR.
