TV “AI” labels can cover picture processing, sound adjustment, connected services and personalisation. Compare what the exact model does with your sources and room, rather than paying for the label alone.
This guide also explains viewing-recognition privacy settings and why disabling one option does not disable every data flow.
Voice control: check the complete setup

A missing assistant name in a brief feature list is not proof of absence. If voice control matters, confirm the exact suffix, firmware and service before buying.
AI picture processing: what it does and does not do
Upscaling
Upscaling does not create detail out of nothing.
What it does is estimate — a trained model predicts what the missing pixels should be. Good upscaling makes the image look cleaner, with smoother edges and less visible noise.
A 4K output does not make a 1080p recording native 4K. A claim of similar perceived quality needs stated sources, settings and comparison conditions.
Resolution and compression are separate: a compressed stream can still be native 4K. Check the programme, plan, device and output. Scaling matters when source resolution differs from the panel; it does not always matter more than panel contrast, reflections or motion handling.
Ambient light adjustment
On models with ambient-light adjustment, a sensor can change brightness as room light changes. Compare it with the feature off and check the supported Movie or Filmmaker mode; colour accuracy and brightness behaviour depend on the actual mode and settings.
Scene recognition
Models offering scene recognition may adjust processing for detected content. Compare the feature off and on: it can change the intended appearance, but the result depends on the implementation and settings.
AI audio
The audio AI features that actually appear on Samsung's official specification sheets are Adaptive Sound (adjusting settings to the content in real time) and Object Tracking Sound (moving audio with on-screen objects).
Dialogue clarity depends on the mix, volume, selected output and speakers. Try supported dialogue settings and confirm the audio path first. A suitable Sound Bar may help when speaker capability or placement is the limitation, but it cannot correct every source or configuration problem.
Smart home integration
Smart-home support depends on the TV's actual hub capabilities and compatible devices. Samsung uses SmartThings and LG has ThinQ-related features, but do not assume every model provides every Matter or device-control function.
In practice that means viewing a door camera on the TV, switching lights, or controlling air conditioning. Check that the devices you already own are compatible before you buy — the Matter standard has made this far easier, but not every older device supports it.

ACR — Automatic Content Recognition
ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) is viewing-recognition functionality on some smart TVs. Samsung's US support description says enabling its feature can collect viewing history, device/service identifiers and IP information. Treat that as the described Samsung service, not a universal privacy policy for all brands or regions.

Samsung also states that it does not record or watch the content displayed on your screen, and that the feature is optional and can be disabled in settings.
How to turn it off
Samsung calls it Viewing Information Services, usually found under Settings and then Terms & Privacy. LG's equivalent is Live Plus, generally under Additional Settings.
Menu names and locations move between model years, so we are not going to print one fixed path here — a wrong path would only send you hunting.

What happens if you disable it
Disabling viewing recognition can reduce personalised recommendations and advertising. Read the exact toggle's description: ACR is separate from app accounts, voice services and other telemetry. Turning it off is not a total data-collection switch or a guarantee that every connected feature is unaffected.

Frequently asked questions
Do Samsung TVs support Alexa?
It depends on the complete model and territory. Confirm built-in versus external Alexa control, supported language, account and firmware; an omitted feature is not proof of absence.
Can AI upscaling turn old content into 4K?
No. Upscaling estimates the missing pixels; it does not recover real detail. It can make an image look cleaner and smoother, but that is not the same as native 4K.
Is "AI picture quality" worth paying for?
Compare processing with your actual sources: upscaling is relevant when source and panel resolutions differ, while compression artefacts are a separate issue. A processor name or tier alone does not establish a picture-quality advantage; compare settings, motion, contrast and reflections too.
Can I switch off the data collection?
Where the model offers optional ACR, use its privacy setting to disable that feature. App, voice and other data flows need separate settings and terms.
Does disabling ACR affect Netflix?
TV viewing recognition and the streaming app's own account/recommendations are separate. Check the exact privacy option; disabling ACR does not automatically disable the app's collection.
