Two hardware upgrades separate the P8L from TCL's QLED models, and both survive the move down to 55 inches: a Mini LED backlight with quantum dot colour, and a panel that refreshes at 144Hz natively. At this size it makes a sharp choice for a gaming setup in a bedroom or a smaller living room. One thing does change at 55 inches, and we would rather say it up front: TCL fits its ONKYO 2.1 system to the 65-inch and larger sizes only, so the 55-inch uses a 2.0-channel speaker system.
Key features
QD-Mini LED with 16-bit backlight control
The P8L pairs a Mini LED backlight with a quantum dot colour layer covering 93% of DCI-P3. TCL states that the 55- and 65-inch sizes use 16-bit backlight control, which gives finer steps between brightness levels and smoother gradients in skies and shadows. TCL does not publish a dimming zone count for the 55-inch P8L, so we do not quote one. Rated brightness is 450 cd/m².
144Hz native panel with 288Hz VRR over HDMI
The panel runs at 144Hz natively and accepts 4K 144Hz signals. TCL's 288 VRR Game Accelerator works through HDMI 1 and 2 with a compatible source, and AMD FreeSync is supported. For PS5, Xbox Series X or PC gaming at a desk-to-bed distance, this is the main reason to pick the P8L over the 60Hz P7L.
HVA panel with 6000:1 native contrast
Underneath is a CSOT HVA panel, which TCL rates at 6000:1 native contrast for the 55-inch model. Combined with the Mini LED backlight, dark scenes hold more depth than on a panel-only QLED set. HDR support covers Dolby Vision and HDR10.
Sound, connections and Google TV
The 55-inch uses a 30W 2.0-channel speaker system with Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X decoding. It is fine for dialogue and everyday TV; if you want bass weight for films, plan for a soundbar. Four HDMI inputs with HDMI 2.1 eARC, two USB ports, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.4 cover connectivity, and AirPlay 2 is built in alongside Chromecast. Google TV with Gemini runs the software, and a built-in DTMB tuner receives Hong Kong free-to-air channels.

- Smaller living rooms where a 65-inch would dominate the wall but you still want Mini LED contrast.
- Not for anyone expecting ONKYO sound at this size. The 55-inch uses 2.0 speakers; the ONKYO 2.1 system starts at 65 inches. It is also not a bright-room HDR set at 450 cd/m² — the C7L and C8L are far brighter.
Warranty and delivery
This is Hong Kong licensed stock (行貨) carrying the manufacturer's Hong Kong warranty. The exact warranty term is stated on the warranty card supplied with the set. Viewing is available by appointment at our Kwun Tong showroom.
For a 55-inch set, delivery with tabletop installation is HK$300, or delivery with wall mounting is HK$600 with the bracket included. Collection at the Kwun Tong shop is free. Walk-up buildings without a lift add HK$100 per floor, with no cap. Discovery Bay adds HK$500. Cheung Chau and Lamma Island orders are delivered to the Central pier for self-collection, without installation. Installation is a paid service and is not included in the price of the set.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 55-inch P8L have the ONKYO sound system?
No. TCL states that the ONKYO 2.1 Hi-Fi system is fitted to the 65-, 75- and 85-inch P8L, and that the 55-inch uses 2.0 speakers. At 55 inches the A400M does carry ONKYO-branded audio.
Is 144Hz the real panel refresh rate?
Yes. The panel refreshes natively at 144Hz and accepts 4K 144Hz input. The 288Hz figure refers to TCL's VRR Game Accelerator via HDMI 1 and 2 with a compatible source.
Does it receive Hong Kong free-to-air TV?
Yes. A DTMB digital terrestrial tuner is built in, so an aerial connection brings in local free-to-air channels without a set-top box.
