TCL 98-Inch P8L QD-Mini LED 4K Google TV

The 98-inch P8L is not a stretched 65 or 75-inch set. TCL Hong Kong gives this size its own specification: a QD-Mini LED backlight with Precise Dimming of up to 512 zones, Dolby Vision IQ, IMAX Enhanced and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, plus 64GB of storage and 40W ONKYO 2.1 sound. The HVA panel runs at 144Hz native, and the 288 VRR Game Accelerator works through HDMI 1 and 2. At 64 mm deep and 51.8 kg without its stand it is a realistic wall-mount, but the carton is 2.38 metres long.

Up to 512 dimming zones: a 98-inch figure

TCL Hong Kong notes that its Precise Dimming figure of up to 512 zones is the configuration of the 98-inch P8L. TCL pairs the zones with a new light-emitting chip, condensed micro lenses and Micro-OD optics, all aimed at controlling halo around bright objects. The HVA panel is rated by TCL at 5000:1 native contrast, and the quantum dot layer covers 93% of DCI-P3. TCL describes brightness only as High HDR Brightness and publishes no nit figure, so we do not quote one. HDR formats listed for Hong Kong are Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 and IMAX Enhanced.

Delivery: a 2.38-metre carton

Check the route with us before you order. TCL lists the carton at 2384 x 1430 x 215 mm without pallet and 73.1 kg gross, and many Hong Kong lifts cannot take a box that long, even on the diagonal. Measure the lift car including its diagonal, the flat door, corridor turns and any stairs, then send us the figures so we can confirm the route with you first. The set itself is 2178 mm wide and weighs 51.8 kg without its stand, so carrying it is a job for several people. Installation is available as a paid service.

Wall mounting, or feet set 1.71 metres apart

On the wall, the VESA pattern is 600 x 500 and the load is 51.8 kg, so you need a solid concrete or brick wall; plasterboard false walls must be checked before any drilling. TCL designs the back with cable management so the set can sit close to the wall. On furniture, TCL's spec sheet lists a basic stand with a 1709 x 420 mm footprint, and its product images show two feet near the ends of the set, so the TV bench must be at least 1.71 metres wide and 42 cm deep. With the stand fitted, the set stands 1285 mm tall.

144Hz native, ONKYO 2.1 sound and Google TV

The panel is 144Hz native, and TCL's 288 VRR Game Accelerator lifts that to 288Hz with a 288Hz source on HDMI 1 and 2; AMD FreeSync Premium Pro is listed for this size. There are four HDMI inputs with HDMI 2.1 and eARC, one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.4. Sound is ONKYO's 2.1 Hi-Fi system at 40W, with a bass unit at the back, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. Google TV runs on TCL's AiPQ processor with 64GB of storage, AirPlay 2, HomeKit and the Gamebar.

Warranty and delivery

This is Hong Kong licensed stock carrying the manufacturer's Hong Kong warranty. The exact warranty term is stated on the warranty card supplied with the set. Viewing is available by appointment at our Kwun Tong showroom.

For a set this size, delivery with tabletop installation is HK$1,500, or delivery with wall mounting is HK$2,000 with the bracket included. Collection at the Kwun Tong showroom is free, and kerbside drop-off (we bring it to street level) is HK$200. Walk-up buildings without a lift add HK$100 per floor, with no cap. Discovery Bay adds HK$500. Cheung Chau and Lamma Island orders are delivered to the Central pier for self-collection, without installation. Before ordering, please tell us the lift size, the door and corridor width, and whether the TV wall is solid or plasterboard. Installation is a paid service and is not included in the price of the set.

Frequently asked questions

How is the 98-inch P8L different from the 65 and 75-inch?

TCL Hong Kong publishes a different specification. The 98-inch lists up to 512 dimming zones, Dolby Vision IQ, IMAX Enhanced, FreeSync Premium Pro, 64GB of storage and 40W audio. For the 65 and 75-inch, TCL's spec sheet lists the technology as QLED at 450 cd/m2, with Dolby Vision, standard FreeSync, 32GB, 35W and no zone count. All three share 144Hz native, ONKYO 2.1 sound and four HDMI inputs.

Is there a stand, and what furniture does it need?

TCL's Hong Kong spec sheet lists a basic stand with a 1709 x 420 mm footprint and a with-stand weight of 52.8 kg, and TCL's images show two feet near the ends of the set. The TV bench therefore needs to be at least 1.71 metres wide and 42 cm deep. TCL does not publish a box-contents list, so ask us to confirm before ordering if you plan to use the feet.

Will the carton fit in my building's lift?
