When buying a Bluetooth speaker for a Hong Kong home, start with where it will be used and how much space it needs. A large party model may be awkward to store or too loud for your usual listening level.
This guide starts from the situation: whether the speaker will leave the house, whether anyone will sing, and what water resistance and connections you need.
1. Four categories
| Type | Typical use | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-portable | Hiking, camping, desk; wet environments only within the model's instructions | JBL Go 5, Clip 5, Tribit PocketGo, StormBox Mini+ |
| Mid-size portable | BBQs, rooftops, camping, small gatherings | JBL Flip 7, Charge 6, Xtreme 5, Tribit StormBox 2 |
| Party and karaoke | Birthdays, company events, singing at home, small venues | JBL PartyBox On-The-Go 2, PartyBox 120, Tribit StormBox Blast 2, Samsung Sound Tower |
| Desktop and shelf | Living room, bedroom or office; check mains or battery operation by model | Marshall Acton III, Stanmore III, Bose SoundLink Revolve+ II |
2. Reading the water-resistance rating
In an IP rating, the first digit describes dust protection and the second describes water protection. X means no rating is stated for that category.
- IPX4 describes splash resistance under test conditions. It does not establish shower or bathroom-steam suitability.
- IPX5/IPX6 describe resistance to specified water-jet tests. They do not give general permission to rinse a speaker or submerge it.
- IPX7 describes temporary immersion under specified test conditions; confirm the manufacturer's limits for the model.
- IP67 adds rated dust protection to the stated immersion protection. It does not guarantee suitability for seawater, pool chemicals, heat or steam.
For a bathroom, beach or pool, check the exact model's temperature, steam, cleaning, water and charging instructions. Do not infer suitability from the IP label alone. Keep charging ports dry and follow the manufacturer’s drying instructions before charging.
3. Battery life and charging
Quoted runtime depends on each manufacturer's test conditions, volume and enabled features. Loud playback, lights and charging a phone can reduce battery life. When choosing:
- Hiking, camping, no power nearby → a mid-size model with genuinely long runtime.
- Want it to charge your phone → some models double as a power bank (for example the JBL Charge 6), at the cost of playback time.
- Party speakers → check whether the battery is built in or mains power is required; larger floor-standing units usually need a socket.
4. If someone is going to sing
Karaoke is a different requirement from listening. Three things decide it:
- Included or supported microphones. Check the exact regional bundle for the PartyBox On-The-Go 2 and the microphone inputs on the StormBox Blast 2. An existing speaker can use a two-microphone wireless set only if its receiver output and the speaker's microphone input are compatible; Bluetooth music playback alone does not establish microphone support.
- Reverb and vocal controls. Check whether microphone level and effects can be adjusted independently of the backing track.
- Latency. Delay in the phone, app, microphone or connection can affect timing. A dedicated wireless microphone link does not by itself guarantee the complete setup's latency.
The full range is in microphones.
5. Pick by situation
| Situation | Consider | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Hiking or camping | Compact portable speaker | Weight, secure carrying, runtime and permitted weather exposure |
| Beach or poolside | Portable model with a suitable IP rating | The manufacturer's sand, saltwater, pool-water and drying restrictions |
| Rooftop BBQ or small gathering | Mid-size portable speaker | Listening area, volume, battery operation and neighbours |
| Karaoke at home | Small or mid-size party speaker | Compatible microphone input, vocal controls and storage space |
| Company event or larger venue | Party speaker or a sound system sized for the venue | Audience layout, coverage and power; size or wattage alone cannot guarantee coverage |
| Permanent living-room use | Shelf or desktop model | Dimensions, power supply, connections and listening preference |
6. Pairing two, or linking several
Stereo pairing and multi-speaker linking are model-specific. Support may differ across brands and generations, and two identical units still need an explicitly supported pairing mode. Confirm the exact compatible models, firmware and whether the mode provides stereo or shared playback before buying a second unit.
7. As a gift
For a gift, ask where the recipient will use it and whether portability or singing matters. Compare the Go, Clip or PocketGo class for a compact option, or a Marshall shelf model for home use. For karaoke, confirm the included microphone and compatible inputs. More ideas are in our Christmas gift guide.
FAQ
Is more wattage always better?
Wattage alone does not establish sound quality, distortion or venue coverage, especially when brands use different measurement methods. In a small flat, placement, EQ and listening level also matter; follow the model's placement guidance.
Can I connect one to a TV?
Check whether the TV and speaker have compatible Bluetooth or wired connections. Bluetooth may introduce lip-sync delay. For regular TV use, compare a Sound Bar with the required TV connection and supported audio formats — see Sound Bars.
Can two people take turns from different phones?
Some models support multipoint, holding two devices connected at once. Check the product page for it.
Will it disturb the neighbours?
It can, especially with louder playback or strong bass. Transmission depends on the building, speaker placement, content and listening level. Start at a low volume, adjust bass for the room and reduce playback if it disturbs neighbours.
Ordering and warranty
Confirm whether the exact item is Hong Kong licensed stock with brand warranty or an international version with store-provided cover, and check its product-specific replacement and repair terms. Price, availability, delivery timing and collection arrangements need confirmation when ordering. The Kwun Tong store is for stock storage and collection.
