Samsung Q7F vs Q8F Review: Which Samsung QLED TV Is Worth Buying?
Samsung remains one of the most influential brands in television, and its QLED range is the reason why. Compared with a conventional LED set, a QLED uses a quantum dot layer to deliver higher brightness and richer, more accurate colour.
Within Samsung's mid-range QLED line, the Q7F and the Q8F are both popular. At 65 inches they are only HK$400 apart — which is why "is the extra four hundred worth it?" is one of the questions we are asked most often in the shop.
This article answers it directly. Every specification below comes from that model's own product page, and the prices are our own stock prices as at July 2026.
The Short Answer: There Is Exactly One Real Difference
If you only want the headline, it is this:
The Q7F and Q8F use the same processor (Q4 AI), the same 60Hz panel, the same three HDMI ports, the same Tizen platform, and neither has VRR. The only real difference is the backlight.
- Q7F — direct-lit LED backlight, no local dimming
- Q8F — Dual LED backlight with Supreme UHD Dimming, rated at 100% colour volume
That brings two knock-on differences: HDR moves from Quantum HDR to Quantum HDR+, and gaming gains Super Ultra Wide Game View and Mini Map Zoom.
So the HK$400 buys you backlight control and black levels — not a faster panel. We will come back to that, because it changes what console gamers should buy.

Most rows are identical. The difference sits in the backlight row — and it matters more than a single row suggests.

At 65" and 75" the gap is just HK$400. What it buys is the Dual LED backlight and Supreme UHD Dimming — better black levels and contrast. What it does not buy is a faster panel: both are 60Hz. If you are weighing up that HK$400 for gaming, don't — see "Which one for gaming?" below.
Understanding Samsung QLED Technology
Before the comparison, a word on what QLED actually is.
Samsung's QLED televisions place a quantum dot layer in front of the LCD panel. These particles emit very precise colour when lit, which gives you:
- Higher brightness
- More vivid colour
- Better colour accuracy
- Good visibility in well-lit rooms
This is why Samsung QLED sets tend to do well in living rooms with real ambient light.
But quantum dots cannot change black levels. Black levels come from the backlight — which is exactly where the Q7F and Q8F part company.
Picture Quality: Where the Difference Actually Is
Backlight and black levels
The Q7F uses a direct-lit LED backlight with no local dimming. The whole backlight brightens and dims together, so in a dark room a night scene will look grey rather than black.
The Q8F uses a Dual LED backlight with Supreme UHD Dimming, which adjusts brightness across different areas of the screen according to content. In the same night scene, the shadows go deeper while highlights stay bright.
This is the most tangible difference between them, and the easiest one to see side by side in the shop — particularly on dark material.
Colour
Both use quantum dots and both look vivid. The Q8F additionally claims 100% colour volume, meaning saturation holds up across brightness levels — colours in bright highlights don't wash out.
Processor
Both run the Q4 AI processor with 4K AI upscaling. No difference here. Most of what people watch in Hong Kong is broadcast signal or compressed streaming rather than native 4K, so the upscaler affects the picture more than the panel spec does — and on that front these two are identical.
HDR Performance
The Q7F supports Quantum HDR and HDR10+. The Q8F supports Quantum HDR+ and HDR10+.
HDR10+ uses dynamic metadata to adjust brightness and contrast scene by scene, improving highlight detail, shadow detail and overall contrast.
The reason the Q8F does more with HDR is, again, the backlight — you need dimming zones to open up the gap between light and dark.
Neither supports Dolby Vision. No Samsung television does; the whole range uses HDR10+ instead. If Dolby Vision matters to you, look at TCL, Hisense or Toshiba.
Which One for Gaming?
We are going to be blunt here, because this is where most buyers are misled.
The Q7F and the Q8F are both 60Hz, and neither has VRR. Neither is a console gaming television.
The Q8F does add genuine gaming features over the Q7F — Auto Game Mode (ALLM) for automatic low-latency switching, Game Motion Plus, Super Ultra Wide Game View for 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios, and Mini Map Zoom. Those help with PC gaming and casual console play.
But if you want a PS5 or Xbox Series X to do what it can do — 120fps output, variable refresh rate to eliminate tearing — neither of these will do it. That HK$400 does not buy you a refresh rate.
For console gaming at 65 inches, the real options are:
- Samsung QN70F 65" — HK$5,980: Neo QLED with Mini LED, native 120Hz, Neo Quantum HDR. HK$600 more than the Q8F, and you get Mini LED zone dimming as well as the faster panel.
- Toshiba Z670NK 65" — HK$8,650: 4K QLED whose spec sheet explicitly lists 144Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDMI 2.1 and Game Mode Pro, plus Dolby Vision. If you want the complete console feature set documented, this is the only one here that has it.
If you game occasionally, either the Q7F or Q8F is fine. If you game seriously, don't choose between these two at all.
Design and Build
Both use Samsung's AirSlim design with slim bezels, both are 25.7mm deep, and their dimensions differ by under a millimetre. Sitting on a TV unit, most people could not tell them apart.
If looks are your deciding factor, there is nothing to decide between here.
Smart TV Features
Both run Samsung Tizen OS with Samsung Vision AI, one of the easier smart TV platforms to live with.
The usual apps are all present: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video. Samsung's Gaming Hub is built in for cloud gaming services. Both have Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 5 and far-field Bixby voice control.
On the smart platform there is no difference at all between them.
Sound
Both have built-in stereo speakers (20W two-channel on the Q8F) with Object Tracking Sound Lite, which moves the sound with the action on screen. That is enough for everyday viewing — dialogue is clear, but bass is limited.
For a serious improvement, add a Dolby Atmos soundbar. Both sets support Q-Symphony, so a Samsung soundbar plays in concert with the TV speakers rather than replacing them.
Who Should Buy the Samsung Q7F?
- You mainly watch in a living room with ambient light
- You are not especially bothered about black levels in a dark room
- You want quantum dot picture quality at the lowest Samsung entry price
- You don't play console games, or only occasionally

- You draw the curtains to watch films and care about shadow detail
- You watch a lot of HDR and want better contrast
- You game on PC and would use the ultra-wide aspect ratios

Samsung Q7F vs Q8F: Verdict
The Samsung Q7F is a clearly positioned value QLED. For streaming, drama and sport in a room with ambient light, it is entirely enough.
The extra HK$400 for the Samsung Q8F buys the Dual LED backlight and Supreme UHD Dimming — better blacks, better HDR contrast. If you watch films with the lights off, that is worth paying. If you don't, the Q7F is already sufficient.
But do not choose either one for console gaming. Both are 60Hz. For that, look at the QN70F or the Toshiba Z670NK.
FAQ: Samsung Q7F vs Q8F
Is the Samsung Q8F better than the Q7F?
On picture quality, yes. The Q8F uses a Dual LED backlight with Supreme UHD Dimming, giving better black levels and HDR contrast. But the processor, refresh rate, HDMI count and smart platform are identical.
Is the Q8F 120Hz?
No. According to its specification, the Samsung Q8F (Hong Kong version) is 50/60Hz. The Q7F is 60Hz native. Neither supports VRR. If you need 120Hz, look at the Samsung QN70F at HK$5,980, which has a native 120Hz panel.
Are the Samsung Q7F and Q8F OLED TVs?
No. Both are QLED televisions using quantum dot LCD technology, not OLED panels. If you want to compare with OLED, see our OLED range.
Which is better for gaming?
Neither is an ideal console TV, because both are 60Hz without VRR. The Q8F adds ALLM and ultra-wide aspect ratio support, which suits PC and casual play. For serious console gaming, look at the QN70F (120Hz) or the Toshiba Z670NK (144Hz with VRR).
Is the Samsung Q7F good for films?
Yes. The Q7F has quantum dot colour and HDR10+ support and handles films and streaming well. It is only in a fully dark room that its blacks look grey next to the Q8F.
How much is the price difference?
