The short answer
Choose by ambient light, viewing hours, image size and optical path. Compare exact models and full installed costs rather than treating an unnamed projector as equivalent to a native 4K TV.
Dividing line one: when do you watch?
A projector works by reflected light, so the more ambient light in the room, the paler the picture. That is physics, not a model-specific weakness. So the first question is not the budget but "when is it mostly on?"
Compare brightness figures only when the measurement standard and conditions are stated, such as ANSI or ISO lumens. Do not use a fixed ANSI-to-ISO conversion or a single lumen threshold as a guarantee for daytime viewing.
- Dim bedroom or occasional use: check brightness at the intended image size with the lights and curtains you will use.
- Evening living-room use: allow for screen size, screen gain, image mode and residual ambient light.
- Daytime use: assess whether windows and lighting can be controlled. A compatible ambient-light-rejecting screen can help, but does not replace light control.
Ambient light raises the visible black level of a projected image. If you mainly watch during the day and cannot control the room's light, a television is usually the more practical option. Compare the actual models and room rather than choosing by lumens alone.
Dividing line two: will it physically fit a Hong Kong flat?
This is what people most often regret afterwards. Here is arithmetic you can check:
A 100-inch 16:9 image is 2.214 metres wide. Specification sheets quote a throw ratio, and throw distance = throw ratio × image width.

Ultra-short throw can suit a shallow room; short or standard throw may also fit a planned optical path. Check lens distance, cabinet depth, image height, ventilation and matching ALR/CLR geometry.
One more thing: the wall you project onto needs to be flat, pale and ideally free of texture or hangings. Plenty of Hong Kong flats have false walls, pictures, or uneven plaster — in which case budget the space and money for a screen.
Dividing line three: how big, and for how much
Compare the projector, matching screen, audio and installation quote with the TV's complete supplied-and-installed quote:

Large-image value depends on the exact projector, matching screen, light control and installation quote. Screen size alone does not establish which system costs less.
Other practical differences worth pricing in
- Broadcast reception. Check whether the exact projector has a tuner compatible with Hong Kong DTMB. If not, aerial channels need a compatible DTMB set-top box; streaming or pay-TV boxes are separate options. Check the television's exact tuner too.
- Sound. Check the chosen projector’s speaker specification and where the unit will sit relative to viewers. If built-in sound does not meet your needs, consider compatible external audio, including a Sound Bar where the connections and room suit it; external audio is not automatically required.
- Noise. Compare the actual model's fan noise, measurement distance and picture mode; a quieter mode may reduce brightness. TV noise also depends on the model and any external equipment.
- For gaming, check measured input lag and supported resolution/refresh combinations in the intended mode. Support for 120Hz at a lower resolution does not establish 4K120 performance.
- A light-source hour rating is not a whole-projector lifespan or a decade-of-service guarantee. Confirm the exact model's rating conditions.
Which one is for you
Buy a television if: you watch during the day, there are children in the house, it will be left on in the background, you want to connect an aerial, your living room has plenty of windows and you would rather not draw curtains daily, or the size you actually want is 65 to 85 inches rather than 100-plus.
Buy a projector if: films come first, viewing is mostly at night, you want 100 inches or more, you have a flat pale wall (or will fit a screen), and its short, ultra-short or standard-throw optical path fits the planned room.
Plenty of people buy both — a television in the living room for daily use and the children, a projector in a bedroom or media room for films. Check whether both devices would actually be used before budgeting for two systems.

Do projectors need frequent lamp replacement?
Laser/LED ratings do not guarantee whole-projector life. Cooling, maintenance and other components matter; confirm the exact SKU's noise and care requirements.
