Among in-ear noise cancellers, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are the pair most people use as a reference point. The headline feature of this first generation is CustomTune, which measures the shape of your ear canal each time you put the buds in and adjusts both tuning and noise cancellation to match. They suit daily commuters and anyone working in an open-plan office who wants quiet the moment the buds seat.
Key features
CustomTune personalised calibration
Every time you insert the earbuds, CustomTune analyses the shape of your ears and auto-adjusts the sound and the noise cancellation to that shape. Ear canals differ enough that the same earbud genuinely performs differently from person to person, and this is Bose's answer to that. There is nothing to set up in the app; the calibration happens at the moment you put them in.
Three listening modes, plus your own
Quiet Mode gives full noise cancellation, Aware Mode gives full transparency, and Immersion adds spatial audio. You can also blend the two and save the result as a Custom Mode in the Bose app. Bose combines passive isolation with active reduction here, which is why getting the right eartip seal makes a large difference to the end result.
Bose Immersive Audio
Immersive Audio spatialises stereo content so that music appears to sit in front of you rather than inside your head. The trade-off is battery: playback drops from up to 6 hours with Immersive Audio off to up to 4 hours with it on. Whether that matters depends entirely on how long your journey is.
Codec and connection
The earbuds support Qualcomm aptX Adaptive and carry Snapdragon Sound certification, so a compatible Android phone gets higher bitrate and lower latency streaming. Bluetooth multipoint lets them hold two source devices at once, so moving between a phone and a laptop does not require re-pairing. Android users also get Google Fast Pair for one-tap setup.

Who it's for
- Daily commuters and open-plan office workers who want the room to go quiet as soon as the buds are seated.
- Listeners who would rather the earbuds calibrate themselves than pull EQ sliders in an app.
- Android owners on a Snapdragon Sound phone who want the bandwidth and latency benefits of aptX Adaptive.
- Who it isn't for: skip these if you need eight or nine hours out of the case in one stretch. Playback is up to 6 hours, only 4 with Immersive Audio, and this generation's case does not support wireless charging.

FAQ
How do these differ from the 2nd generation? The 2nd generation keeps every feature of this model and adds wireless charging, AI-based background noise suppression for calls, improved ActiveSense, case battery reporting in the app, and the option to disable touch controls. If you do not need wireless charging and you do not take many calls in noisy places, this generation still covers the essentials.
Can I wear them at the gym? The earbuds have passed IPX4 testing, so sweat and splashing water from any direction are fine. The interior of the charging case tolerates water or sweat left on the buds when you drop them back in, but the case itself is not rated, so keep it out of wet environments.
Do iPhone users lose anything? A little. aptX Adaptive and Snapdragon Sound need a compatible Android device, so iPhones fall back to AAC. CustomTune, the three listening modes, Immersive Audio and multipoint all work normally on iOS, and in day-to-day listening the gap is smaller than the codec list suggests.
