If you want a headphone that adds as little seasoning as possible and lets you hear how a recording was actually made, the HD 560S is the most neutral choice in this family. Sennheiser positions it as an open-back "tuned to reveal the truth in your music", and it is rated at under 0.05% THD — the lowest figure of the three. It weighs 280 g and uses angled transducers behind velour pads.

Key features

Angled transducers and a polymer-blend membrane

The transducers are mounted at an angle, which Sennheiser describes as recreating the optimal listening position, so sound arrives from slightly in front rather than straight at the side of your head. The polymer-blend membrane is specified for linear behaviour rather than a boosted bottom end or a lifted treble.

Under 0.05% THD, 110 dB sensitivity

Total harmonic distortion is rated below 0.05% at 1 kHz / 90 dB SPL, a clear step below the 0.2% quoted for the other two models here, and sound pressure level is 110 dB at 1 kHz / 1 Vrms, the highest of the three. With 120 ohms impedance it is easier to bring up to volume than the HD 505, though a clean source matters more here, not less.

Ventilated earcups and bass extension

Ventilated earcups let sound waves propagate naturally; Sennheiser describes smooth, deep bass extension and improved clarity above 10 kHz, with a quoted response of 6 Hz to 38,000 Hz. In use it does not inflate the low end — kick and bass guitar keep their shape and stop when they should, which is what makes it usable as a mixing reference.

280 g body with velour pads

At 280 g it is the heaviest of the three, but the velour pads and what Sennheiser calls a "barely there" fit keep it wearable through long sessions. Dimensions are 198 × 111 × 300 mm, with a 1.8 m detachable cable, 3.5 mm plug and a screw-on 6.3 mm adapter.

Who it's for

  • People mixing, referencing masters or cutting video who need an open-back that does not flatter the source.
  • Listeners who enjoy comparing pressings and remasters and prefer an analytical presentation.
  • Buyers who want the lowest distortion figure of the three and can live with the extra weight.
  • Who it isn't for: anyone who wants atmosphere over accuracy, and anyone taking headphones outdoors. Neutral tuning is unkind to poor recordings, and the open back leaks and isolates nothing.

FAQ

Does the HD 560S need an amp or DAC?

At 120 ohms with 110 dB sound pressure level it plays loud enough from a computer or phone, so an amp is not a requirement to get started. But its selling point is low distortion and neutrality, which means noise and distortion in the source are audible too — a clean USB DAC/amp or an audio interface is what lets the resolution show.

Is it the most enjoyable of the three to listen to?

Depends what you want. It measures lowest for distortion and highest for sensitivity, but the tuning is a neutral reference that will not sweeten anything. If you want an easier, more relaxed listen, the HD 505 or HD 550 may suit you better; if you want to hear a recording's flaws, take the HD 560S.

Is 280 g heavy?

It is about 43 g more than the 237 g models in the same range, but the weight distribution and velour pads spread the pressure, and most people manage two to three hours without complaint. If you are sensitive to clamp or crown pressure, book a fitting at the Kwun Tong shop before ordering.
