4G Camera Data Usage: Hong Kong SIM Planning

4G Camera Data Usage: Hong Kong SIM Planning

A 4G camera’s monthly data use depends on transmitted bitrate and time. Local microSD recording, remote live viewing, playback and cloud uploading are different workloads. Before choosing a Hong Kong SIM plan for a parking space or village house, estimate how often you will actually view or transfer footage.

A transparent streaming estimate

Estimated GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × viewing minutes × 0.0075. This decimal-unit calculation covers the specified video stream. It excludes audio, protocol overhead, retries, notifications and separate uploads. Use the actual average bitrate where available; a “4K” label does not specify a fixed data rate.

Assumed bitrate 10 remote-viewing minutes per day 30-day video-only estimate
1Mbps 0.075GB 2.25GB
2Mbps 0.15GB 4.5GB
4Mbps 0.30GB 9GB

These are worked calculations, not measured consumption for a particular camera. At 2Mbps for an hour every day, the same calculation gives about 27GB over 30 days before other traffic. Leaving live view open can dominate usage.

Separate the activities

Activity Planning implication
Writing to the camera’s memory card A local write is not an upload of the entire recording; network communication may still occur
Remote live view and playback Video is transmitted; bitrate, duration and concurrent viewers matter
Cloud or FTP upload Supported models and enabled upload settings add traffic
Notifications, email and downloads These can also consume data and sit outside the simple video estimate

Choose a SIM plan using observed usage

  • Verify the regional camera version, network requirements, SIM and APN configuration before selecting a carrier.
  • Check the plan’s data allowance, fair-use terms, throttling and permitted device use.
  • Record several days of representative activity, including playback and event peaks.
  • Use carrier-account or supported device statistics to review consumption, then allow headroom.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 128GB card mean 128GB of monthly mobile data?

No. The card stores footage locally. Mobile data measures network transfer; uploading and remote viewing depend on settings and use.

Do two viewers always double data consumption?

They can increase traffic, but exact stream and service behaviour varies. Check observed carrier usage instead of assuming a fixed multiplier.

Will adding a recorder remove cellular charges?

Not automatically. Recorder compatibility differs between cellular, Wi-Fi and PoE models, and remote access can still transfer data.
