A one-minute buying guide
This 2026 high-end Sound Bar guide compares rear-speaker placement, immersive formats, HDMI connections and power requirements using specification information. The room, source and complete SKU matter more than channel counts or wattage alone.
With a compatible Samsung TV, compare Q-Symphony on the Samsung HW-Q990H; owning a Samsung TV does not establish compatibility. To reduce power cables behind the sofa, compare the rechargeable detachable rears on the JBL Bar 1300 MK2, while allowing for charging.
For dialogue, a simpler option such as the JBL Cinema SB120 may be worth comparing. Results depend on the soundtrack, settings, placement and listening needs; no fixed improvement percentage is promised. Confirm prices and availability when ordering.
Which Sound Bar setup suits a Hong Kong living room?
Sofa against the wall
Check the rear-speaker positions in the manual before choosing a surround package. If you cannot leave suitable space around the seats, compare a single-bar JBL Bar 2.0 All-in-One MK2 setup with a separate-rear system; more channels alone will not solve a placement problem.
No sockets behind the sofa
Compare the JBL Bar 800 MK2 with rechargeable detachable rears. Plan where to recharge them. For Samsung HW-Q990H rear speakers, allow suitable power sockets; wireless audio is not battery power.
Late-night viewing in a flat
Compare dialogue, night-mode and subwoofer-level controls on the exact model. These settings may help you listen at a lower level, but do not soundproof the room or guarantee that neighbours cannot hear it.
Several consoles or a disc player
Draw the connection route first. The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 with three HDMI inputs is worth comparing when sources need direct connections. Verify the required video modes, audio formats and TV eARC support separately.
Other ecosystems to compare
When comparing ecosystems, consider the services you use, expansion plans and TV compatibility. These models give you other directions to explore; check their regional features and availability before choosing.
| Model | Confirm before comparing |
|---|---|
| Sonos Arc Ultra | Multi-room, streaming and expansion requirements |
| KEF XIO | Music connections, dimensions and required formats |
| LG Sound Suite H7 | Compatible TVs, wireless expansion and actual channel configuration |
| Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar | Smart-home, connection and expansion compatibility |
Five things to check before buying
1. Rear speakers, height channels and physical drivers
Physical rear speakers, up-firing drivers and virtual surround are different configurations and can still use DSP processing together. A channel label such as 11.1.4 is not a physical driver count. An omitted height-channel number alone does not establish every processing method used.
Height effects depend on the ceiling, room, placement, settings and source. Clear overhead positioning is not guaranteed; compare the actual configuration with your room.
2. Match Dolby Atmos and DTS to your sources
Dolby Atmos is not mandatory for every use. Streaming audio depends on the title, plan, app and device. For discs, check the actual DTS:X, DTS-HD or Dolby soundtrack, then the player, TV and Sound Bar route.
Samsung Q990H can support DTS:X: the UK HW-Q990H/XU page explicitly lists it, as does the AU 2026 HW-Q990H specification sheet. These official references apply to the stated regional models.
For another supply region, including an XT-suffix model, confirm the complete SKU's official format support. An omitted DTS listing does not prove non-support. For Blu-ray discs, compare the required soundtrack and connection route rather than excluding Q990H solely because one listing omits DTS.
3. HDMI inputs and the complete route
Count your source devices, then check the complete SKU's HDMI inputs, ARC/eARC, audio formats and video pass-through conditions. An HDMI version number does not guarantee every function.
A player or console connected directly to the Sound Bar is a different route from audio passed through the TV. With eARC, decoding, pass-through and settings still need checking on each device.
The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 global manual confirms 3 HDMI inputs. The official references list 1 HDMI input for both Bar 800 MK2 and Bar 500 MK2. This makes input count a useful comparison if several sources must connect directly; check the video modes and audio formats needed on that route as well.
4. Power for the rear speakers
“Wireless rears” usually describes the signal, not an absence of power requirements. Allow sockets for the Q990H rears and confirm the supplied kit and power requirements against the complete SKU.
The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 owner's manual documents rechargeable detachable rears. They can reduce power cables behind the sofa, but charging still needs planning and runtime depends on content and volume.
The JBL GB Bar 800 MK2 reference also lists rechargeable rears without additional power cables and up to 10 hours of playback, depending on content and volume. Treat that figure as the manufacturer's conditional runtime, rather than a promise for every listening session.
5. Space for the subwoofer
Measure floor space, access and the clearance required by the manual. For Q990H, check the supplied subwoofer's dimensions against the space beside the TV cabinet; shape alone does not establish that it will fit.
The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 specification sheet documents one subwoofer enclosure with two 8-inch drivers, weighing 12 kg, and six up-firing drivers across the system. These are manufacturer references for that model; confirm the received variant and accessories and follow its handling instructions.
Six options to compare
| Model | Comparison direction | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| JBL Cinema SB120 | Simple TV audio and dialogue option | Connections, dimensions and settings; no improvement percentage |
| JBL Bar 2.0 All-in-One MK2 | Preference for a single enclosure and fewer separate pieces | Complete SKU, connections and placement |
| JBL Bar 500 MK2 | Compare subwoofer and surround configuration | Official Bar 500 MK2 reference: 940 mm bar width and 1 HDMI input; compare the required formats and cabinet space |
| JBL Bar 800 MK2 | Rechargeable detachable rears | JBL GB reference: bar width 854 mm without rears, 1163 mm with rears attached; 1 HDMI input |
| Samsung HW-Q990H | Compatible Samsung TV integration and surround configuration | Compatible TV for Q-Symphony, rear-speaker sockets and the required audio/video route |
| JBL Bar 1300 MK2 | Rechargeable detachable rears and multiple-device connections | Global manual: 3 HDMI inputs; compare required video modes, audio formats and charging arrangements |
Compare current quotes, supplied accessories and warranty terms alongside the features. Allow space for rear speakers, the subwoofer and charging, and confirm availability before ordering.
Comparing the two flagship candidates
The table separates official reference models from checks for the supplied regional unit. Regional features and bundles should be confirmed against its complete SKU.
| Item | Samsung HW-Q990H: UK/XU and AU 2026 references | JBL Bar 1300 MK2: global manual and specification sheet |
|---|---|---|
| DTS and source formats | Both regional references list DTS:X; check other regional SKUs and the complete audio route | Match the required disc or streaming soundtrack to the supported formats and player output |
| HDMI and video route | Check the supplied SKU's input count and required HDR/video pass-through | 3 HDMI inputs in the global manual; check the required video mode on each route |
| Samsung TV integration | Q-Symphony needs a compatible Samsung TV and Sound Bar; check wireless Atmos compatibility separately | Compare TV/audio integration separately from Samsung's branded Q-Symphony feature |
| Rear-speaker power | Allow sockets for the rear speakers and confirm the supplied kit | Rechargeable detachable rears; plan charging around use |
| Subwoofer and height hardware | Check dimensions and clearance for the supplied subwoofer and rear speakers | One 12 kg enclosure with two 8-inch drivers; six up-firing drivers across the system |
Check how power is measured. Peak output, continuous output and electricity consumption are different quantities and cannot be compared directly. Wattage does not replace assessment of sound or room coverage.
Questions for Hong Kong buyers
Is an international version suitable for Hong Kong power?
A general “Free Voltage” label does not establish suitability for every supplied version. Ask the supplier to confirm the physical power labels on the bar, subwoofer, rears or adapters, and an appropriate Hong Kong plug. Do not modify wiring or plugs yourself.
Do I need separate wall brackets?
Check the complete regional SKU's box contents, intended mounting locations and installation requirements. The same bracket kit is not guaranteed for every version. Have an appropriate professional assess the wall, bracket and manual requirements.
How should I connect it to the TV?
Check the ARC/eARC ports and supported formats on both devices. eARC is a connection capability, not a guarantee that every source supplies high-resolution or immersive audio; TV pass-through, player output and settings must also be compatible. Optical has more limited format support; do not assume it carries Dolby Atmos.
What if there is no sound?
Follow the manual to confirm the selected input and ARC/eARC port, then check TV audio output, CEC, the cable and source format. A hardware fault is also possible if the connection and settings checks do not restore sound. If unresolved, send the complete TV model, Sound Bar SKU and connection route via WhatsApp.
Are voice assistants supported?
Check voice-assistant support against the complete SKU, region, account and firmware. “Works with Google”, an integrated assistant and voice control through another device are different features, so confirm which one you need.

Buying a TV and soundbar together: keep one connection checklist
Make a shortlist with four entries: the complete TV model, the complete soundbar SKU, each source device and the soundtracks you actually use. Record whether each source connects to the TV or directly to an HDMI input on the bar. Then check the audio formats supported on that exact route; a product's decoding capability and a TV's pass-through support are separate questions.
When replacing the TV too, compare Samsung TV sizes and display families alongside your audio shortlist. Cross-brand HDMI audio and a brand-specific TV-speaker integration feature are different buying decisions. For the cabinet, use the 55-, 65- and 75-inch TV size guide, then measure the actual bar height, screen clearance and remote receiver position.
Return to the soundbar collection for current model options once the connection route and placement are clear. The HDMI organisation's eARC overview explains the return-audio connection; exact device support still needs its own manual. This is a specification-based planning checklist, not a listening test.
Selection notes updated 22 October 2026. Manufacturer specifications, calculated examples and actual tests are distinct; confirm the exact supply version before buying.
