Instant photography is having a real revival, but one thing rarely gets said before you buy: you are not only choosing a camera, you are choosing a film format — and that choice is permanent. You can buy another body later; the format stays. So this guide starts with film.
Three film formats — know this before you buy
instax mini — the common one
Small prints, close to business-card size. The easiest film to find, the widest choice of designs, and the lowest cost per shot. Fits a wallet, a journal, or a note to someone. Shared across the most cameras, so several bodies in one household stay compatible.
instax SQUARE — 1:1
Noticeably larger than mini, with a recognisable square frame. Flattering for food, mood shots and group photos, and substantial enough to pin up or frame.
instax WIDE — the widest
Close to twice the width of a mini print. Whole groups fit without squeezing and landscapes get room to breathe. Parties, birthdays and graduations are where it earns its place.
None of them interchange: a mini camera cannot take WIDE film, and a WIDE camera cannot use SQUARE. If you own several instax bodies, sticking to one format saves both hassle and money.
⚠ The real cost is film, not the camera
Most people compare camera prices, but film is the long-term expense. A camera lasts years; in that time you may buy dozens of packs.
The number worth calculating is cost per print × how much you will actually shoot. Seen that way, the few hundred dollars extra for a hybrid pays back quickly: a pure-film camera spends a frame on every shot, good or bad, while a hybrid lets you choose — the same pack stretches much further.
The reverse holds too. If you shoot two or three times a year, the simplicity and immediacy of a pure-film camera may suit you better — nothing to think about, just pick it up and shoot.
Three routes: pure film, hybrid, printer
Pure film — press and it prints
No screen, no memory. Fast, direct and full of ritual, and it prints the bad shots too — that imperfection is exactly why many people love it. The safest pick for beginners and for gifts.
Examples: Instax Mini 41 (retro body, automatic exposure), Instax Mini 99 (colour effects and brightness control), Instax SQUARE SQ1 (square format), Instax WIDE 400 (wide, with self-timer and tripod socket).
Hybrid — shoot digitally, print the keepers
Inside is a small digital camera: review on screen, print what you like, keep the rest as files. Most double as phone printers.
Examples: Instax Mini Evo (10 lens × 10 film effects, 100 combinations), Instax Mini Evo Cinema (adds video, with a QR code on the print that plays it back), Instax WIDE Evo (wide format), Instax Mini LiPlay+ (records sound into the print).
Printers — no lens, just prints from your phone
They do not shoot. Connect over Bluetooth, add frames and text in the app, out comes a print. The best value if your phone is already your camera — nothing new to learn, and everything in your library becomes printable.

Buying a gift
A pure-film automatic model. Whoever opens it can shoot straight away without reading anything. Include film — cameras do not come with any.
You hate wasting film
Go hybrid. The choose-before-you-print step gets more valuable the more you shoot.
Your phone is already your camera
Buy a printer. You are not short of photos; you are short of physical ones.
Instant cameras are not film cameras
Plenty of people search for a "film camera" when what they want is the texture of a physical print — instant photography delivers that, and hands it over on the spot. The difference is workflow: a traditional film camera means finishing a roll and waiting days for the lab; an instant camera prints there and then; a hybrid goes further — shoot digitally, review, print only what you choose.
To be clear: we only do instant cameras and printing. We do not carry traditional film cameras, developing services, DSLRs, mirrorless bodies or action cameras.

FAQ
Do instant cameras need film loaded?
Yes, and film is not included. Pure-film cameras spend a frame per shot; hybrids only spend one when you print, so a pack lasts far longer.
Is instax film interchangeable?
Only within the same format. mini takes mini, SQUARE takes SQUARE, WIDE takes WIDE — none of them cross over.
How long do prints take to develop?
The print ejects immediately and the image appears over a few minutes. No need to shake it — shaking does not speed anything up.
Is a hybrid worth the extra?
It depends how much you shoot. Shoot often and the film you save covers the difference quickly; shoot a few times a year and a pure-film camera's simplicity suits you better.
What warranty applies to cameras?
Cameras carry a 10-day exchange for defects (non-man-made). The 3-year on-site warranty applies only to international-version TVs and does not cover cameras — see our FAQ.
