Photo Printers: 4PASS, ZINK and Instant Film Compared

Photo Printers: 4PASS, ZINK and Instant Film Compared

Photo printers use different technologies, which affect consumables and the finished print. Compare the size you want, the compatible paper or cartridge cost, and how you select a photo before printing. Photo selection depends on the device and workflow, not simply on whether it uses ZINK, dye transfer or film.

1. Three technologies, three cost models

4PASS dye transfer ZINK (zero ink) instax film
How it works Ribbon-based dye transfer in successive passes, followed by a protective layer; the final protective pass is not a fourth colour The paper itself contains the colour; heat from the printer develops it, so there is no ribbon or cartridge Chemical instant film, the same as a traditional instant camera
Consumable Paper-and-ribbon cartridge with a fixed print count Paper only Film packs
The print Laminated; Kodak states photos "last longer than typical instant prints" Peel-and-stick backing Film look, with the familiar border
Can you choose before printing? Phone-app printers let you select a photo first; camera-printer operation varies by model Phone-app printers let you select a photo first; check standalone operation by model Phone-connected film printers and hybrid cameras can let you choose first. A pure film camera exposes a frame when you shoot. Any workflow can still produce an unwanted print

2. Size decides the use

There is also the HP Sprocket Photobooth for birthdays, weddings and openings, where guests shoot and print for themselves.

3. Working out cost per print

The printer price is the small number; consumables are the real cost. The arithmetic is simple: cartridge price ÷ prints per cartridge. Which means:

  • 4PASS: paper and ribbon come together with a fixed count (30, 80 and so on), so cost per print is obvious.
  • ZINK: paper only, in 20 or 50-sheet packs, easy to top up.
  • Film: calculate the current compatible pack price per usable print, then compare the same output size and quantity.

Compare printer and compatible-consumable costs together; the balance varies by model and current pack prices. Printing twenty photos a year? Take the inexpensive printer and small packs. Printing constantly for journals or parties? Do the consumable maths before choosing.

4. Match to what you want

What you want Choose Why
Journals, stickers, the fridge 2x3in ZINK Peel-and-stick backing
Giving to family, filling an album 4x6in 4PASS Standard size, laminated finish
Handing prints to friends on the spot 3x3in or 2.1x3.4in Small, quick, pocketable
Birthdays, weddings, events Photobooth or a camera-printer with suitable standalone operation Check whether guests can shoot and print without a phone, and what setup the model needs
The instant-film experience itself A film camera Not something a printer reproduces

5. Practical things to know

  • App-based. Most portable printers pair over Bluetooth and print from a phone app that handles cropping, frames and stickers.
  • Not document printers. These print photos only — do not expect office inkjet duties.
  • Consumables are model-specific. Match 4PASS paper-and-ribbon sets to the exact printer. For ZINK, check the manufacturer's approved paper, not only the dimensions or the ZINK name.
  • Hong Kong weather. Paper and film dislike heat and humidity — reseal opened packs and keep them out of cars and windowsills.
  • Power and charging. Check the exact model's connector, cable and power requirements, and whether it uses a battery or mains power. For a battery model, charge it as directed before an event; do not assume every portable printer uses USB-C.

6. As a gift

Photo printers stay on gift lists because they solve a real problem: photos that never leave the phone. If you are giving one, include consumables — check the exact package's included sheets or cartridge, and add compatible supplies for the recipient's needs. More pairings in our Christmas gift guide.

FAQ

Does ZINK really use no ink?

Yes. The colour is in the paper and heat develops it, so there are no cartridges or ribbons to replace — only paper to buy.

Do 4PASS prints really last longer?

Kodak's stated claim is that the final protective layer makes photos "last longer than typical instant prints". Actual longevity still depends on storage — away from light, damp and heat, as with any print.

Can I print ID or passport photos?

Technically yes, but you would have to size and crop them yourself, and these printers do not guarantee colour accuracy. For official use, go to a photo lab.

Will it work with an older phone?

Check the exact printer's supported app, minimum OS version, Bluetooth requirements and required phone permissions. Confirm the app can be installed and the stated printing features work with your handset before ordering.

Can I use third-party paper?

Use the paper-and-ribbon set specified for your 4PASS model. For ZINK, use the manufacturer's approved paper for the exact printer; size alone does not prove compatibility. Do not treat the linked Kodak packs as approved for an HP Sprocket unless HP's compatibility information confirms that combination.

Ordering and warranty

For Kodak and HP products, confirm the exact supply edition and applicable warranty or consumable terms; for Fujifilm instant cameras, check the exact product page's supply version and service terms. A listed 10-day replacement-for-defects window is not the complete repair warranty. Confirm stock, delivery timing and collection arrangements before ordering. Our Kwun Tong location is for stock and collection. Unsure about size, WhatsApp +852 9847 9793 with what you plan to print.
