If the dialogue from your Sound Bar arrives before a person moves their lips, increasing audio delay may help. If their lips move first and the words arrive afterwards, adding more delay makes the timing worse. Start by identifying the direction, then find out which source or connection causes it.
This guide is for Hong Kong households where a television may share a Sound Bar with streaming apps, a set-top box and a games console. Change one setting at a time and replay the same scene, so you can tell what actually helps.
First check: is the sound early or late?
Choose a familiar, original-language scene with a close-up of someone speaking. A clearly visible clap can also help. Avoid judging lip sync from dubbed dialogue. Listen at a comfortable volume and note which event happens first.
| What you notice | Likely adjustment to try | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| You hear the word or clap before the matching movement. | Add a little audio delay using one supported control. | Available controls depend on the model and input. |
| You see the movement before hearing it. | Reduce existing audio delay; investigate processing and routing. | A control that only adds audio delay cannot advance late sound. |
| The mismatch changes between scenes or sources. | Investigate the particular app, programme or device. | One fixed delay setting may not suit every source. |
Do not assume a setting labelled “A/V Sync” always delays audio. Sony documents televisions that delay the picture instead. Check what your own manual says the control does.
Record a baseline before changing settings
- Write down the full TV, Sound Bar and external-device model numbers and software versions.
- Record the affected app or channel, programme, timestamp and selected audio track.
- Sketch the cable route, including port labels: source to TV, or source to Sound Bar first.
- Note the current digital audio format, eARC setting, sound mode and any delay values.
- Record whether the problem starts immediately or appears later in playback.
Photos of the current settings make it easier to restore them. Menu names vary by brand, model, firmware and region; use the manual for the version sold with your equipment.
Compare sources before adjusting everything
Where available, replay the same clip and audio track through the TV’s native app, the HDMI set-top box or streaming device, and a supported console media app. If identical content is unavailable, use comparable dialogue and record the difference. Then compare the Sound Bar with the TV speakers.
| Playback path | Useful comparison | Next focus |
|---|---|---|
| Native TV app | Compare another app and the TV speakers. | App or track, TV output, Sound Bar processing. |
| HDMI set-top box or streaming device | Compare with native-app playback. | Source audio format and the TV’s handling of HDMI audio. |
| Console | Compare media playback with the affected game. | Console format, game settings and TV Game Mode. |
| TV-to-Sound Bar Bluetooth | Repeat over a supported wired connection. | Bluetooth timing and source-specific control limits. |
A fault confined to one channel or programme points towards the content or provider. TV speakers staying in sync while the Sound Bar lags narrows the investigation to the external-audio path; it does not prove the Sound Bar is faulty.
A practical troubleshooting ladder
1. Restart and check supported updates
Restart the affected app and devices using their normal controls. Check the manufacturers’ instructions for available software updates. Inspect accessible HDMI connections without moving a heavy or wall-mounted TV yourself. Factory reset is a later, model-specific step, after recording settings and discussing persistent faults with support.
2. Adjust delay only in the useful direction
For early sound, increase one audio-delay control in small steps. For late sound, reduce added delay towards its minimum before trying anything else. Avoid changing TV and Sound Bar delay together.
Samsung’s Australian guide gives a 0–300 ms Audio Sync example, while its US guide says the feature is unavailable with Bluetooth or USB sources. These are examples, not universal specifications for every Hong Kong model. Check your exact manual for the range and supported inputs.
3. Test PCM, then check what changed
If the manual offers PCM output, try it temporarily on the TV or affected source, changing only one device first. Sony includes PCM among its lip-sync troubleshooting options. If timing improves, the audio format or its handling is a useful lead.
PCM selection may change surround sound or remove Atmos from that playback path. Restore the preferred format and compare afterwards. PCM does not universally mean “no Atmos”: Sonos documents Dolby MAT carrying multichannel PCM with Atmos object data. An ordinary PCM output option is not a promise of MAT support.
4. Check supported audio pass-through
For a late-audio HDMI source, investigate the TV’s audio pass-through option if the manual supports it. Sony recommends pass-through settings for some affected BRAVIA configurations. The source format must also be supported by the TV’s forwarding path and the Sound Bar. Recheck timing and the format actually received; a pass-through label alone does not establish compatibility.
5. Consider the HDMI route carefully
With source → TV → Sound Bar, the TV forwards audio through ARC/eARC. If the Sound Bar has a separate HDMI input, source → Sound Bar → TV is an alternative Sony suggests for persistent HDMI-source sync problems.
Before rerouting, verify the Sound Bar’s video pass-through supports the source’s resolution, refresh rate and HDR format, including 4K at 120 Hz if needed. HDMI signal settings and cables also matter. An ARC/eARC TV connection alone does not mean the bar has a separate source input. Our Hong Kong TV connection guide explains the ports and routes.
6. Check modes against the actual task
Try a standard sound mode if your manual suggests reducing sound effects. Keep a console’s game test separate from film playback: Sony recommends Game Mode for gaming and switching it off for ordinary TV or disc viewing on applicable models. Some TV sync controls delay the picture, so check responsiveness as well as dialogue timing.
7. Retest and prepare a useful support report
Replay the original scene, then check another app and the console if used. Save the successful setting and any format tradeoff. If the issue persists, give support your baseline, connection route, early/late observation and changes tried. If sound disappears during testing, follow our TV no-sound troubleshooting guide before continuing timing adjustments.
Frequently asked questions
Will eARC automatically fix lip sync?
No blanket fix is assured. Sony’s guidance still includes format, pass-through and A/V Sync checks on eARC setups. Verify support at both ends and test the affected source.
Do I need eARC for every Dolby Atmos signal?
No. Sonos documents Atmos carried by Dolby Digital Plus over compatible ARC connections, while TrueHD Atmos needs eARC on its TV-audio route. The source, TV and Sound Bar must support the format.
Why does Bluetooth lag when HDMI seems fine?
Bluetooth follows a different audio path and can introduce delay. A supported wired comparison helps isolate it. Samsung’s documented Sound Bar Audio Sync control cannot be assumed to work on Bluetooth.
Why does changing one delay value fix films but spoil games?
Sources, audio formats and picture modes can differ. Record settings per input where supported, and test dialogue timing and game response separately before accepting a compromise.
