Point-and-shoot cameras came back because a phone photo looks like a phone photo. The FZ55 is the plain version of that idea: 106 grams, a 5x zoom reaching 140mm equivalent, a real shutter button, and no app in the way. It is not trying to beat your phone on image quality — it is a camera you hand to someone at a party and get the film-era look back.

Key features

5x optical zoom, 28-140mm equivalent

The lens covers wide-angle group shots through to a short telephoto that flatters faces, with a maximum aperture of f/3.9 at the wide end and f/6.3 at full zoom. A further 6x digital zoom is available, and macro focusing works from 5cm at the wide end.

106 grams, and it fits a pocket

At 91.5 x 56.5 x 22.9mm and 106g without the strap, the FZ55 is the size of a phone but half the thickness of a phone in a case. The front is flat, which is what makes it slide into a pocket rather than catch.

A 16-megapixel CMOS sensor

The 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor gives 16.35 effective megapixels, with a 4608 x 3456 maximum image size. Worth stating plainly: this is a CMOS sensor, not a CCD, despite how often these cameras are listed as CCD compacts. ISO runs from 100 to 3200 and shutter speeds from 1/2000 to 4 seconds, extending to 30 seconds in manual mode.

Rechargeable, and it takes ordinary SD cards

The LB-012 700mAh lithium battery is rated at about 200 shots and charges in the camera. Storage is standard SD, SDHC or SDXC up to 512GB, with about 63MB built in for the first few frames before you put a card in.

Who it's for

  • Anyone who wants holiday and party photos that do not look computationally processed.
  • Parents and travellers who would rather hand a cheap camera to a child than a phone.
  • People who want a zoom that reaches past what a phone's telephoto can do optically.
  • Not for low-light work or action. A 1/2.3-inch sensor with digital-only stabilisation needs reasonable light, and a flash for anything indoors after dark.

Warranty and delivery

This is an international version: a brand-new unit brought in from an overseas market, with the same hardware as local stock, but warranty running through us rather than the Hong Kong distributor. Cover is our 10-day exchange for units that fail. Every unit is 100% brand new and comes with the AC adapter as supplied in the international retail box. You can book a viewing at our Kwun Tong shop before ordering. Full terms are on the warranty policy page, and our parallel import versus licensed goods guide explains the difference in full.

Non-TV items ship by SF Express freight-collect, with the customer paying the shipping fee, or collect free at the Kwun Tong shop between 11:00 and 19:00. Details are on the shipping policy page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a CCD camera?

No. The FZ55 uses a CMOS sensor. These cameras are frequently listed as CCD compacts because of the look people associate with them, but Kodak's own specification sheet says CMOS.

Does it charge over USB-C?

No, it uses Micro-USB. The battery charges inside the camera, and an AC adapter is supplied in the international box.

How is it different from the FZ45?

Three things: the FZ55 has 5x optical zoom against 4x, a rechargeable lithium battery instead of two AA cells, and a slimmer flat-fronted body. The sensor and the screen are identical on both, so image quality is the same.
