Dual drivers, twin DACs

The 11 mm unit handles low frequencies while a 6 mm tweeter takes the highs, and each is driven by its own separately tuned DAC rather than sharing one signal path. Frequency response runs from 15 Hz to 40 kHz, and there are three microphones per side. Splitting the work this way reduces interference between the bands, which shows up as clearer separation between vocals and instruments.

Adaptive ANC up to 55 dB

Cancellation is real-time adaptive, recalculating 800 times per second, and reaches up to 55 dB across a bandwidth of up to 5,500 Hz. Four modes are available: ANC on, Adaptive, Transparency and off. Calls run through a three-microphone AI noise cancellation system that OnePlus rates as a 200% improvement in voice cancelling over the previous model. In practice, steady low-frequency noise such as aircraft or air conditioning is what disappears most convincingly.

Battery and fast charging

On AAC with ANC off, the buds run 11 hours and 45 hours with the case; with ANC on that becomes 6 hours and 24 hours. Switching to LHDC shortens it: 9 hours and 37 hours with ANC off, 5.5 hours and 22 hours with ANC on. Talk time is 6 hours with ANC off and 4 hours with it on. A 10-minute charge gives 3.5 hours of playback, or 11 hours counting the case; a full charge takes about 50 minutes for the buds and about 80 minutes with the case.

Connection, protection and features

Bluetooth 5.4 with Steady Connect gives an effective range of 10 m, and codecs cover LHDC 5.0, AAC and SBC, with LHDC 5.0 reaching 1 Mbps at 24-bit/192 kHz. Dual-device connection and Google Fast Pair are supported, and gaming latency is rated at 47 ms. The earbuds carry an IP55 dust and water rating (the case is not included in that rating). Other features include OnePlus 3D Audio, a six-band Sound Master EQ, Golden Sound hearing personalisation, AI Translation, Find My Earbuds and swipe volume control.

FAQ

How do these compare with the Buds Pro 3? Both use an 11 mm plus 6 mm dual-driver arrangement with twin DACs, but Buds 4 are rated up to 55 dB of cancellation against 50 dB for the Pro 3. The Pro 3 answer back with Dynaudio tuning, a wireless charging case and a bone-conduction microphone, none of which the Buds 4 have. On runtime, Buds 4 reach 45 hours with the case with ANC off, slightly ahead of the Pro 3's 43.

Do I need a OnePlus phone? No. They pair with any Android or iOS device, and settings are handled through the HeyMelody app. Some features such as AI Translation depend on OnePlus software versions, and LHDC 5.0 requires a phone that supports the codec, but core functionality is not restricted.

Can I train in them? The earbuds carry an IP55 dust and water rating, so sweat and light rain are not a problem. Note that IP55 covers the earbuds only, not the charging case, so wipe the buds down before dropping them back in to keep moisture out of the case.
