JBL Bar 800MK2: detachable rears, dimensions and connections

This specification-based guide explains the JBL Bar 800MK2's detachable rechargeable rear speakers, placement and connections. Dolby Atmos support does not by itself establish physical upward-firing drivers or height channels. Check the full regional SKU before buying.

Product and availability

JBL Bar 800MK2 — confirm price, availability, supplied version and warranty provider when ordering.

What the Bar 800MK2 actually is

The 7.1 system comprises a main Sound Bar, two detachable rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer. This label is not a count of physical height drivers.

  • Main Sound Bar; check the driver layout before choosing for physical height effects.
  • Two detachable wireless rear speakers — they dock magnetically onto the ends of the bar to charge when not in use
  • A wireless subwoofer; confirm whether the full supplied SKU uses a 10-inch driver.

Detached rears use rechargeable batteries, so no rear power cable is needed during battery operation. Recharge them by docking; the main bar and subwoofer still need power points. Placement and content affect surround perception.

Maximum and RMS power ratings describe different measurement conditions. If power is important to your comparison, check the complete SKU’s official rating and distortion conditions; wattage alone does not establish everyday loudness, bass extension or a listening winner.

Connections and streaming

Connection need Buying check
HDMI The UK reference lists one source input. Check the required video pass-through mode and TV ARC/eARC path in the complete SKU manual.
Wireless music Confirm your actual casting or music service, region, account and network requirements.
App and USB Confirm app/firmware compatibility and whether the regional USB port supports playback.

Before buying for a specific music library, confirm the exact service support. Cast names, a network connection and a USB socket do not guarantee every subscription, codec or region works.

Dimensions: measure both configurations

JBL's UK support page specifies 854mm width for the main bar alone and 1163mm with the rears docked. A top under 1.2m is not automatically too narrow. Check usable width/depth, TV-foot height, cable clearance and the supplied SKU's complete dimensions/weights.

Placement and setup

  • Keep the bar unobstructed and follow the full-SKU placement instructions; wall mounting needs a suitable bracket and competent installer.
  • Place the rears behind the seating where safe and stable; maintain a charging routine.
  • Use HDMI eARC when the TV/source route supports it; check formats on the complete route. Optical has more limited audio transport.
  • Calibrate after furniture placement and adjust subwoofer level to the room; this does not guarantee identical sound at every seat.

Compare the arrangements, not just power ratings

The 800MK2 offers detachable rechargeable rears. Compare placement and charging needs with a simpler bar rather than infer volume from a small maximum-power difference. Compare current quotes for the supplied versions.

JBL's UK 1300MK2 page specifies three HDMI inputs and two 8-inch drivers in one subwoofer enclosure, not one 8-inch driver. Diameter and channel count alone do not establish bass extension, loudness or sound quality.

Who may find it suitable

It may suit a room with safe rear-speaker space, subwoofer space and power points. Compare another arrangement if you cannot fit the chosen detached/docked width, do not want charging duties, or need to limit bass transmission to neighbours. Surround effects depend on soundtrack, routing and room; compare positioning and charging needs as well as format support.

Warranty and collection

Confirm the supplied version and warranty provider. Sound Bar: one month repair warranty. The TV policy is different: three years of store-provided inspection and repair labour, with parts quoted separately; it does not apply to this Sound Bar.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is it?

854mm without the rears attached; 1163mm with them docked. Check depth, clearance and TV-foot height too.

How long do the rears last?

JBL specifies up to 10 hours, depending on content and volume. Recharge them by docking.

Does Atmos prove physical height speakers?

No. Atmos compatibility and virtual processing differ from physical upward-firing drivers. If you need physical upward-firing height drivers, check the full SKU manual’s driver layout rather than relying on the Atmos logo.
