Start IP camera security with unique credentials, updates, sharing permissions and privacy-aware framing. A baby, pet or doorway camera may capture detailed family routines. The product’s advertised features are only part of the decision: who can view, download and manage recordings also matters. This is a setup checklist, not an absolute-security ranking of brands.
Account, device and encryption credentials are different
A platform may have an account password, device password, video encryption code or App lock. Changing one does not necessarily change the others. Use distinct long passwords, preferably managed with a password manager. Enable two-step verification where supported and protect recovery options. Avoid publishing verification codes, QR codes or device-identity screenshots.
Give family members separate access
| Platform | Check | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| EZVIZ | Family & Guests, supported sharing and matching account regions | Invite separate accounts and review the available permissions |
| Reolink | Basic vs Advanced Sharing or User accounts; model and firmware support | Check the method before choosing viewing and management rights |
| Other platforms / SpotCam | Sharing, revocation and viewing options for the exact device | Use current official instructions rather than another brand’s steps |
Reolink notes that Basic Sharing can give others the same permissions, including changing settings. Do not describe every share as view-only. Supported Advanced Sharing or User accounts can provide more limited access. Revoke access when a helper leaves or a family arrangement changes, then check that the former recipient can no longer view the device.
Update the correct hardware version
- Record the full model, hardware and firmware versions.
- Use official update channels and matching files, never a similar-looking model’s firmware.
- Recheck recording, time, notifications, permissions and privacy after updates.
- Review continued use in sensitive rooms if security updates are no longer available.
Reduce unnecessary capture
Avoid bathrooms, changing areas and views unrelated to the intended purpose. Where supported, use privacy or sleep mode when monitoring is not wanted and test whether video and audio actually stop. A motion zone may only change alerts. Check actual recordings to verify a privacy mask. See our Hong Kong doorway CCTV privacy guide for entrance use.
Check the network and storage too
Maintain supported security settings on both router and camera. Do not casually open external ports, disable the firewall or expose an RTSP link to make access easier. Use official guidance for specialist integration. Local card storage does not mean remote access is disabled; cloud encryption claims do not remove the need to protect credentials, sharing and retention.
Match products to the use case, then configure access
- Pets: consider SpotCam Mibo or Reolink E1 Zoom 4K with the pet camera buying guide. Configure access in the relevant platform.
- Baby care: BabyCam Pro can use a separate dedicated screen. Plan local viewing and remote access separately; see the BB Cam and screen guide.
- General indoor viewing: EZVIZ H6C Pro 3K lists a privacy sleep mode. Test its behaviour and sharing permissions on the installed version.
A practical acceptance check
- Sign in as owner and as a separate shared user.
- Test playback, download, talk, pan-and-tilt and settings access; remove unnecessary permissions.
- Test privacy mode and audio settings, then verify the recordings.
- Export a test clip and review deletion, overwrite and retention arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
Does PoE or a memory card make unauthorised viewing impossible?
No. Power, transport and storage choices do not replace account, device and network security.
Do all brands support the same sharing and verification controls?
No. Availability depends on the platform, device, region and firmware. Use the current official interface for the exact device.
What if I suspect unauthorised access?
Stop unnecessary capture or sharing, use a trusted device to change affected credentials through official procedures, revoke access and contact official support. Preserve relevant records and seek appropriate assistance for a privacy incident or dispute.
