Mini LED is not a new display technology — it is an advanced form of backlighting. Same LCD panel; the few hundred large LEDs behind it are replaced by several thousand tiny ones, which allows far more precise zone-by-zone light control.
The result: deeper blacks, less blooming, punchier HDR highlights. In a bright Hong Kong living room, that upgrade is far more visible than going from 4K to 8K.

What a standard LED TV actually is
Despite the name, an "LED TV" is an LCD television that happens to use LEDs for its backlight.
There are three layers: the LCD panel that controls colour, a backlight system made of LEDs, and a diffuser that spreads the light. The LEDs sit behind or around the panel and shine through it to create the picture.

The limits of standard LED are clear: greyish blacks instead of true black, blooming around bright objects, weak contrast in dark scenes, limited HDR. Mini LED exists to address exactly those.
What Mini LED changes
Not the panel — the granularity of the backlight. Several thousand very small LEDs instead of a few hundred large ones, which buys you four things:
- Far more local dimming zones
- More precise brightness control
- Cleaner separation between light and dark areas
- Higher peak brightness without washing out the blacks
An analogy: standard LED is a few large ceiling lights; Mini LED is several hundred small individually dimmable spotlights. The finer the control, the more real the picture looks.
Why backlight control matters more than resolution
Most people start with "4K or 8K". But backlight control usually affects what you actually see more than resolution does.
A poorly backlit 8K TV can look worse than a well backlit 4K one. Mini LED improves shadow detail, black depth, contrast transitions and HDR highlights — all things you notice from the sofa, without walking up to count pixels.

Gimmick or real upgrade?
A real upgrade — but don't expect it to replace OLED.
What Mini LED cannot do: it is not self-emissive, so it cannot produce pixel-level black, and some blooming still appears in extreme scenes.
What Mini LED does deliver: substantially better contrast, much higher brightness, more impactful HDR highlights, and clearly better performance in a bright room.

Large screens and flagships
At 75 inches and above there is the QN80F (from HK$15,580), the QN85F (from HK$19,980) and the QN90F 75-inch at HK$31,980. The QN80F also comes in a 100-inch version.
If you want 8K, we have the Neo QLED 8K QN800C 65-inch at HK$9,980. But honestly: native 8K content is still extremely scarce, and at 65 inches from a normal viewing distance you cannot tell 4K from 8K. The same budget spent on a larger 4K Mini LED usually delivers a more obvious improvement.

What size for a Hong Kong living room
The most common mistake when buying Mini LED is going too small. The benefit of zone dimming is more obvious on a bigger screen.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mini LED better than LED?
Yes. Finer local dimming, higher brightness, better contrast. The difference is clearest in HDR and dark scenes.
Is Mini LED the same as OLED?
No. In OLED every pixel emits its own light. Mini LED is still an LCD; only the backlight has become far more precise.
Do Mini LED TVs get burn-in?
No. Burn-in is a self-emissive display problem. Mini LED is LCD-based and does not carry that risk.
What is the difference between Samsung's Neo QLED and Mini LED?
There isn't one — Neo QLED is simply Samsung's brand name for its Mini LED televisions. The M series (M75H, M80H) is also Mini LED, positioned and named differently.
Is Mini LED worth paying extra for?
If your living room is bright, the TV is on during the day and you watch HDR content — yes. If you mostly watch films at night in a dark room, the same budget may be better spent on OLED.
