Match PoE cameras to an NVR by model, hardware, power and stream requirements before counting cameras or buying storage. A four-camera package or an eight-port recorder is not a universal compatibility guarantee. PoE supplies power and data; the recorder handles supported recording functions.
Compare two connection arrangements
| Arrangement | Planning approach | Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras directly into a PoE NVR | Run camera cables to the recorder | Built-in power, ports and compatibility |
| Cameras through a PoE switch | Use local-network links for distributed positions | Per-port and total power, uplink capacity and network setup |
A normal router port may not provide PoE. A Home Hub is not a PoE power source. Use matching power equipment and appropriate cable and outdoor connection protection; connector shape alone is not an electrical compatibility check.
Check the recorder hardware, not only its name
Reolink compatibility varies by NVR hardware. Its Duo-series table shows reduced-resolution support on some older hardware and no support on other old versions. Record the exact camera, recorder hardware and firmware before ordering. This guide does not claim that every recorder carrying an eight-channel label supports every current camera.
Ports, channels and power are separate limits
Allow for individual and total PoE load, stream requirements, resolution and display behaviour. The manufacturer lists additional connection-count conditions for special camera families including Duo and TrackMix. Plan future cameras at the same time as the initial system instead of assuming every unused port means unrestricted expansion.
Store starting points
- Duo 3 PoE 16MP 180° for a fixed broad overview.
- TrackMix PoE 4K when dual views and tracking suit the task; verify the required streams and recording functions.
- NVS8 with 2TB HDD as a central recorder candidate, after confirming supplied hardware and storage needs.

Continuous recording, internet loss and power loss differ
Configure and play back the intended recording schedule. With power and necessary local links intact, a supported local system may keep recording during an internet outage, while remote access and cloud services are affected. Power failure stops equipment without suitable backup. A UPS plan must include the recorder and camera power path, not only the router.
Acceptance checklist
- Check each camera’s recorded picture quality, time, audio settings and required detection.
- Test live view, playback, searching, export and separate user permissions.
- Confirm recording schedules, overwrite and retention using the storage capacity guide.
- Distinguish internet loss from shutting down local equipment in a planned test.
- Keep a record of models, hardware, firmware and settings for future changes.
Frequently asked questions
Does ONVIF guarantee every cross-brand feature?
No. Verify streaming, detection, two-way audio, multi-lens views and playback separately.
Can every existing 4G battery camera join the NVR?
No such assumption is safe. Check each exact camera type against current official compatibility guidance.
Will 2TB provide 30 days?
Camera count, average bitrate and recording mode determine retention. A drive label alone cannot answer it.
Plan camera positions with the shop CCTV guide or warehouse guide.
