This is the odd one in JBL's line-up, and the reason it is worth a look: it is a guitar practice amp, a Bluetooth speaker and a USB-C audio interface in a body the size of a paperback. Plug a guitar into the quarter-inch jack, stream a backing track over Bluetooth, use Stem AI to strip the guitar out of the recording so you can play the part yourself, then record the result straight into a DAW over USB-C.
One thing to be clear about up front: the BandBox Solo has no IP rating at all. Every other new JBL portable in this range is IP68. This one is indoor equipment.
Key features
Stem AI separates the parts of a song in real time
Stream any track and the BandBox Solo can isolate or remove vocals, drums and guitar as it plays. For practice that is the whole feature — you mute the guitar and play over the rest of the band.
Amp models and effects built in
Tone modelling plus chorus, phaser, reverb and tremolo, all adjustable from the JBL One app. Note that it is the JBL One app, not the JBL Portable app the Go 5, Grip and Tuner 3 use — the two are separate.
A real audio interface over USB-C
USB-C runs UAC audio at 48 kHz / 24-bit in two channels, so a laptop sees it as an input device. That means a guitar take can go directly into recording software without a separate interface.
Guitar in, mic in, headphones out
A quarter-inch instrument input at 100 mV RMS, a microphone input at 20 mV RMS, and a 3.5 mm headphone output rated at a maximum of 1 Vrms into 16 or 32 ohms for silent practice.

Who it's for
- Guitarists practising in a flat who want an amp, a backing-track player and a recording interface without three boxes.
- Anyone learning parts by ear — Stem AI removing the guitar from a recording is genuinely useful for that.
- Not for outdoor or bathroom use. No IP rating, unlike every other speaker on this page.
- Not for filling a room with a band. 18 W into a 2.25-inch driver is a practice amp, and JBL sells the larger BandBox models for anything beyond that.
- Not for anyone who wants deep bass as a music speaker. It starts at 73 Hz.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use it purely as a Bluetooth speaker?
Yes, though at 18 W from one 2.25-inch driver it is a desk speaker rather than a room speaker, and it has no IP rating, so keep it indoors and dry.
Does it need the app?
No — it plays and amplifies standalone. The JBL One app is where the amp models, EQ and effect settings live, so most people will want it.
Is a microphone or cable included?
No. The box contains the unit, a quick start guide and a safety sheet. Instrument cables, microphones and the USB-C cable are separate.
Does it work as an audio interface with a Mac or PC?
Yes, over USB-C as a standard UAC device at 48 kHz / 24-bit, two channels. No driver installation is normally needed.
